PSA: 16:9 ratio is a crop of the 4.3 ratio, set phone to 4:3 for full resolution

This goes for most cell phones, but its worth reminding. The 16:9 simply does a crop, zoomed in version of a 4.3 photo.

If you do a "super wide angle" photo in 16:9 and 4.3 of the same subject, you will notice you get much less image with the 16.9. You can always crop to 16.9 later.

Yup. Kinda crappy that they set the default camera mode to 16:9 haha But yeah, usually you look at the max resolution option and that's the native aspect ratio of your camera sensor. Anything that doesn't match that is going to be a cropped picture. For the V20, the native sensor is 4:3.

Correct....the video resolution is also not set at UHD by default.

Can someone post pics side by side showing the quality difference? Some here are saying that the quality is way better if you use the full resolution. I can't seem to really see the difference on the phone.. at least with my pics.

Probably if you crop you'll see a difference.

Just a guess, but I doubt there's any real quality difference because the phone is pretty much just activating the extra pixel sensors and not actually changing anything physically. Though, this can give you better options for making your own crops due to having more in frame to start with.

But hey, I'm prepared to be proven wrong if side by side comparisons show it.

The crop is different because the V20 uses a different sensor.

The G4, V10 and G5 use a Sony Exmor IMX234, a 1/2.6" 16MP CMOS sensor with 1.12-micron pixels that features CDAF and shoots in a native 16:9 aspect ratio.

The V20 uses a Sony Exmor IMX298, a 1/2.8" 16MP CMOS sensor with 1.12-micron pixels that features PDAF + CDAF and shoots in a native 4:3 aspect ratio. Interestingly, this is the same sensor used in the OnePlus 3.
