No need for root. Just go to setting and turn phone to GSM and utms and you should get GSM signal. BTW I work for metro and your phone won't get signal until you give the imei to metro and have them change it in their database. Posted via the Android Central App

It could be. Usually they keep the interface same. But on my 10.1 note 2014 the 4.4.2 update gave me the newer tab pro interface, notification so there's no telling.

It's a Sim. It usually appears on non Verizon Sim. Perhaps it happened as a fluke to you.
