Yes! This is probably my only complaint about the phone. I'm not sure why they put them right where your hand rests when holding the phone, rather than up and out of the way.

I don't see the point in them. My soon-to-be-replaced-by-the-Nexus-6p phone has a Gorilla Glass display, and after 2.5 years of riding caseless in pockets with coins and keys, there's literally not a single scratch on it.

I couldn't disagree more strongly. I'm not sure why you need grip enhancement for the sides at all. If you have your hand on one edge and fingers on the other, you have opposition and a gentle squeeze will keep it in place. But when you go to reach your thumb all the way across the screen...

Note that background blur is often intended, being particularly desirable for portraits. It's hard to pull off on a cellphone because of the tiny image sensor, but in general, the closer the lens is to the subject, the more out-of-focus the background will be.
