I would suspect an app doing that. I asked about Samsung's car mode app because I know thst app has turned on GPS surreptitiously. Luck finding the cause.

I have not found GPS to have been activated on my system in the last 12 hours. Does not seem to be happening on my system.

I have not noticed this. If it is happening, I'll be very upset. I am setting a MacroDroid macro to announce any time GPS is enabled. Google really, really wants your GPS enabled all the time. In fact, many of their apps will refuse to operate correctly unless you leave GPS enabled. I'll repost...

How did you get that "Portrait mode only" selection to appear in the Home screen settings?

I think I found the answer. From Settings->Lock screen and security->Always on Display the selections options are: Home button and clock, Clock, and Home button. I changed the setting from Home button and clock to simply Clock.

The home key keeps turning on my phone in my pocket. After the phone is on, various touch areas change settings, etc. I can't find a way to turn off the home key. Is it possible.

Wi-Fi calling has always wanted to know your current address and unless you keep GPS enabled, it will ask your address each and every time you use it even at the same location. Wi-Fi calling would be very useful if it were not made so frustrating to use.

I can't access Wi-Fi calling since the update and apparently, the phone can't either, though it wants me to turn it on. I think it should be under connections-> advanced settings, but selecting that doesn't do anything. I may try your solution.ll

Wi-Fi calling is OK if you need it because of a poor signal and you have a strong, stable Wi-Fi and you don't mind leaving your GPS on all the time to confirm your location. Mostly it is not needed. I don't understand why I now have to be constantly bugged to turn it on.

I don't think this is a normal occurrence. I use Firefox exclusively and have not had any crashes. None.
