What update file are you trying to use? Where did you get it? Are you trying to update using ClockworkModRecovery or via stock recovery? Are you rooted? What version are you running right now? We'll need more information to help you out.

I use SMS Backup and Restore frequently. After a couple of disastrous data losses I set it up to back up my texts every morning at 1AM. It's quick and quite handy when jumping from ROM to ROM.
