Same thing? A back cover doesn't add any functionality, whereas a module would. Am I missing something?

The phone will have a back cover... Like all phones do. One of the optional mod things you can snap onto the back is a new backplate, shown in the link above.

So the back plate and the style mods are not the same thing.

That's what it looks like to me. Since the backs in the photo dont have the electrical contacts.

Instead of snapping on an extended battery/camera mod/etc, you can snap on a wood/leather/colored back.

I just realized you guys might not know how the backs "snap" on.

It's with magnets, not clips.

The magnets are really strong, but possibly. Whenever I used to drop my S3 or S4, the back and battery would always go flying, so it probably wouldn't be much different.

I could see why there wouldn't be a point for a fancy back if you are going to use a mod like extended battery

The magnets are really strong, but possibly. Whenever I used to drop my S3 or S4, the back and battery would always go flying, so it probably wouldn't be much different.

I would hope the magnets are really strong. I'm foreseeing a phone where the back plate always looks as though it is loose or coming off and is constantly shifting in my pocket.

So, if the new Moto X/Z has these back plates, what happens to Moto Maker? I had the leather Moto X 2014 and currently the Bambo 2015. Love the personal design. Hopefully Moto Maker doesn't go away.
