Addition slot in sim tray

Additional slot in sim tray is provided which is non functional. Why it is provided and whether it can be used as dual sim tray in any manner?

Cost saving measure. Huawei used some off the shelf bits to save some money in dev costs. Why design a single SIM tray when you can just take a dual and leave one blank?

You can't use it for anything... The slot might hold a card, but there's no connection to do anything with it once it's inside the phone.

On the other hand, it might make for a secure hiding place for a microSD worth of private data (assuming a microSD will fit). Nobody (who hasn't read this thread) would ever know. If you have a cover on your phone, nobody would even think you had a SIM card slot. Real super spy stuff!

I just pulled it out and gave it a whirl....
No dice on it holding a micro SD card. It cant even hold another SIM.

yeah, there's a plastic band going across the slot... im guessing it's there to provide stability to the frame in case there isn't a card inserted. If they use the second, Huawei just punches out the excess.
