managed to get my build working properly. home key and wifi working, baseband showing, seems functional. was missing a few repos on my last build, fixed now. id like to set the default clockspeeds differently, as well as the memory options and governor. any idea where i can change those in the cm9 source? im still getting used to the cm9 source tree setup, fairly new here ;p. clock speeds and memory option defaults in the cm9 build should be changed anyway.. you cant do a fresh flash without it rebooting every 5 minutes unless you change those settings (on vm670)

My vm670 never had a random reboot with default settings. Only restart I had was when I tried hotspots and the button greyed out and 30s to 1 min later reboot

some are built better than others. mine has had reboot problems with all 3 betas from clean flashes until i enable the extra memory options and clockspeed changes, then its solid as a rock without fail

PHONE, ROM & BATTERY:
  • LG Optimus V (LG-VM670) (my everyday phone)
  • Came with "default" Android 2.2.1.
  • Battery (LGIP-400N 1500mAh 5.6Wh) in good condition
  • Problematic ROMs: (a) Quattrimus CM9 and (b) CM9.0 RC1-BobZ

PROBLEMS:
  • Battery does not charge with Quattrimus ROM, neither with Android running nor in Recovery mode.
  • Cannot power off phone when power cable is plugged in with Quattrimus ROM installed; when done (both from Android as well as from Recovery) it shuts down then automatically reboot/restart, if (and only if) the power cable is plugged in. Even when doing "power off" immediately after installing the Quattrimus ROM (with all below wipes), the phone will reboot/startup if the power is plugged in.
  • Phone automatically starts up as soon as the power cable is plugged in with Quattrimus ROM. The phone is certainly off - even verified by taking out the battery first. With "default" Android 2.2.1 as well as with Harmonia and BACKside-IHO the gray LG logo will display for 5 seconds and then the fullscreen animated battery charge bar is display. It is as if Quattrimus skips this "battery charge screen".
  • Connection USB to computer is not detected - neither by Android nor by computer (Windows 7). This works on Android 2.2.1.

This is how I install Quattrimus Beta1pre3 (my first ROM I flash; have not tried with earlier versions):
  • Power cable connected (always).
  • Using Recovery Cannibal Open Touch v1.2 (also tried with ClockworkMod v3.2.0.1 and Xionia CWMA v1.2518.6).
  • Full wipe, i.e. (a) "wipe data/factory reset", (b) "wipe system, cache, data", and (c) "format boot". Repeated 3 times. With the Xionia recovery also "wipe battery stats", but that should be useless.
  • "install zip from sdcard": quattrimus-VM670-cm9-beta1pre3.zip [77,990,048 bytes; md5=86ed01b592b185cfa8b8cf3c557f4203]
  • (a) "wipe dalvik cache" and (b) "wipe cache partition". Repeated 3 times.
  • Reboot system (always with power cable connected).
  • Quattirumus ICS (Android 4.0.4) starts.
  • Everything works (e.g. WiFi, 3G, phone), but the battery does not charge! (battery settings says "discharging" and it went down from 47% to 38%)

DETAILS ON PROBLEMATIC ROMS:
  • Quattrimus CM9:
    • ROM image: quattrimus-VM670-cm9-nightly-20120702.zip [md5=4b3b1eb2a6190d4288b9353642aaf059]
    • Android: 4.0.4
    • Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-tdm-gk-hkicscam-0.1+tommy@ics #1
    • CyanogenMod version: 9.20120702-UNOFFICIAL-VM670
    • Build number: cm_VM670-userdebug 4.0.4 IMM76L eng.20120702.030050 test-keys
  • CM9.0 RC1-BobZ:
    • ROM image: cm-9.0.0-RC1.VM670.BobZhome.06292012.zip [md5=a1a48a6261a95d33cedb560084c2f018]
    • Android: 4.0.4
    • Kernel version: 2.6.35.10-BobZics_v2.9+
    • CyanogenMod version: 9.0.0-RC1.VM670.BobZhome.06292012
    • Build number: cm_VM670-eng 4.0.4 IMM76L eng.bobzhome.20120629.171220 test-keys

TROUBLESHOOTING:
The phone charge both while running and while powered off:
  • The phone charges with the following custom ROMs: BACKside-IHO 05022012, BobZhome 5-20-2012, Harmonia 2.08.
  • When I recover back to "default" Android 2.2.1 and/or install Harmonia 2.08, the phone does indeed charge both when running and when turned off.

None of the following makes the phone charge:
  • Trying with different chargers/cables on 120V: (a) LG: 100-240V/0.2A in, 5.1V/0.7A out, (b) iPod USB charger: 100-240V/0.15A in, 5V/1A out, (c) Samsung 100-240V/0.15A in, 5V/0.7A out, (d) USB power from Lenovo Thinkpad X201. All charges with Android 2.2.1 ROM. Unlikely to be the cause, cf. Post #7932"].
  • Trying to reboot multiple times, with and without the power cable connected.
  • Installing Quattrimus with or without gapps (gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip [52.048,746 bytes; md5=7c524e1e078164f681e0aa6753180b2c] immediately after installing the Quattrimus ZIP).
  • Have tried all of the above with battery at ~40% as well as ~100% (charged via "default" Android 2.2.1).
  • The phone does not charge (=it discharges) while in Cannibal recovery (haven't verified with Xionia). This regardless of ROM installed. Should one expect to be able to charge phone while in Recovery mode?

CONCLUSIONS:
  1. From all of the above, it appears that there is a "low-level charging process" that does not start and which should start early on in the boot process (~5s after the gray LG logo first appears).

MORE TROUBLESHOOTING IDEAS (TO BE DONE):
  • How can I locate the hardware details on this phone in order to compare with others' (working and non-working) phones?
  • Find another Recovery that may do a better job cleaning up the phone.
  • Try installing different levels of battery charge, e.g. 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.
  • tdm says [Post #7890]: "Maybe you can compare kernel dmesg output from the good phone and the bad phone?". Q: How do you do this without 'adb' (because USB-connection is not detected)?

QUESTIONS TO THOSE WITHOUT PROBLEMS:
  • What happens if you in Recovery immediately after install the ROM (before rebooting) choose to 'power off' (instead of 'reboot system now') while having the power plugged in? Mine boots up Quattrimus, i.e. it does not go into "power-off" charge mode (see above).
  • ...

OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS:
  1. henrikb (me/this poster)
  2. josh2903 (got two VM670; one with the problem!): Posts #7889, #7894, #7902, #7932.

UPDATES:
  1. Now using Recovery Cannibal Open Touch v1.2 and wiping multiple times just to be sure (also tried to install ZIPs multiple times) as suggested by Pkt_Lnt in Post #7386.
  2. Confirmed that battery charge with another custom ROM (Harmonia 2.08) as suggested by kylemaguire in Post #7385.
  3. Noticed that with Quattrimus installed and phone being truly turned off, the phone automagically starts (all the way) whenever the power cable is plugged in. I found another person with this odd problem.
  4. With Quattrimus installed, it is not at all possible to charge the phone, because when powering off the phone the phone will automatically restart as soon as the power cable is plugged in (and it does not charge while running - not even in Recovery mode).
  5. Found an android-kernel thread discussing the term "power-off charging" and that it is often handled by the kernel (rather than by hardware which is more expensive).
  6. Found "Huge thanks to Tom Marshall aka tdm for fixing the long suffered charging-while-powered-off bug!" in a thread on "the BACKside ROM, a port of CyanogenMod7 for the Optimus V" and the Xda-developers Post #4116 (by tdm
    Code:
    ), which certainly looks related.
[*]Confirmed that (power-off and running) charging works as expected with [URL="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15812016&postcount=3"]BACKside-IHO 05022012 ROM[/URL].
[*]Same problems (no charging and startup when connecting power cable) with quattrimus-VM670-cm9-alpha10.zip [73,856,060 bytes; md5=0621797e9745d2fb81efa0119c3dec39].
[*]Realized I forgot to do 'format boot' when wiping. Did that and I actually did get the battery icon to show it's charging. However, when I unplugged and replugged it did not start charging. By reinstalling the ROM, I could get it to charge again also in the "power-off" mode. However, it was only for a moment. Now I cannot get it to work, regardless of how I wipe and reinstall the ROM.
    [*]Same problems with quattrimus-VM670-cm9-nightly-20120628.zip.

Battery does not charge

Phone: LG Optimus V (LG-VM670; V670ZV4; Android 2.2.1; no sd-ext)

This is how I install Quattrimus b1p3 (my first ROM

I've tried to reboot multiple times, with and without the power cable connected. Still no charging. I've also tried the above while install gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip [52.048,746 bytes; md5=7c524e1e078164f681e0aa6753180b2c] immediately after Quattrimus; still not charging.

When I recover back to Android 2.2.1, the phone does indeed charge.

/Thanks for all the great work!
Try a new cable/ battery. Does it charge with another rom?

Edit: oh never mind it does work with another rom

First, I'd install the new Cannibal Open Touch Recovery. Xionia is known to not wipe some partitions well. I bet you have something left over conflicting with Quattrimus.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...en-touch-v1-2-latest-update-06-24-2012-a.html

Then wipe /system, cache, data a couple times, then flash Quattrimus twice in a row, then gapps twice in a row, both before reboot. Also, clear cache and dalvik again befor first boot.

Thanks for this. However, before trying, I wish to confirm that this is really safe on an LG Optimus V, because on that Cannibal URL it says "You also agree that this recovery image is to be flashed ONLY on the LG Optimus S, and not any of the other LG Optimus variants."

Update: Argh... is it the same phone but just that U=U.S. Cellular, S=Sprint, and V=Virgin Mobile?

Yes it is the one for V. Drew probably did not correct his copy and paste.

BobZ's recovery has worked very well for me. I have no idea about other recoveries, but I've only had good results with it.

I just watched some of the YouTube Vids, amd IMO, Bobzhome should have ALOT of credit for even getting ICS booting.

VM670 QUAT ROM WITH FIXES INCLUDED:(sorry others, you'll have to wait for tdm to update or compile your own)

working tested rom attached below. I had to uncheck MPPE option to connect to my work's windows vpn but that may be vpn-specific depending on the vpn's security settings:

On that note I have to work in 5 hours. goodnight.
