Project Fi data usage vs Republic Wireless usage

I could not get why my data usage when I switched to Project Fi seemed remarkable ...

Turns out that I was guilty of assuming that Google & Republic have a similar methodology of riding on WiFi preferentially when WiFi is available.

They don't seem to.

Google may select the best signal strength available, so even if you are at home, at work, or elsewhere in a WiFi zone, the phone can ignore the WiFi availability and happily sock you with data charges. Evil.

As we all know, Republic works hard all of the time to keep you on WiFi. I now consider them to be a much better company in this respect.

On Fi phones, you can force them into using WiFi exclusively (but then you have to remember to manually exit WiFi-only when you are out in the real world) ... here is what happened yesterday compared to previous days in my current billing cycle when I had not yet connected the dots ... .004 for the day versus .068 for a previous day ... same environments both days.

Any tips?
