Just picked up the Gear today. The Bluetooth is disconnecting at about 40 feet.

This is unacceptable. Anyone getting better results?

I think it depends on the environment you are in. 300ft seems way out there in my experience with BT devices.

The range varies greatly depending on the circumstances. In my office I have gotten up to 1000 ft., but the situation was that I was in direct line of sight from the phone with no interference.

On other occasions, like the OP, I could not get 40-50 ft without disconnecting. This usually happens when there are a lot of walls, stairs, or glass blocking the line of sight from the Gear to the phone. As a general rule I get between 100-150 ft.

My Gear is about the same (around 40-50 feet), and gets the same connection range as my Bluetooth headsets do.

I can confirm 40-50 ft. At the max footage I was getting connect/disconnect every few seconds. I believe the standard range for BT is 30 feet.

Lol. I think I was being a bit generous in my range assessment.

The more I test it I concur with others that 35-40 ft. is more reasonable. However, I do like that I am notified when the connection is broken. I almost left my phone at the office today but was reminded when the Gear buzzed on my wrist.
