I have a Samsung Galaxy S

When the main screen is on, the HOME button acts like a "selection left" button.
And the SEARCH button, acts like a "selection right" button.
So when I press HOME, it highlights things on the left side of my screen.
When I press SEARCH, it moves along to the next icon to the right.
If I press HOME again, it highlights the icon to the left.
Long-hold does not work either.
I need to get my phone into download mode, but cannot without the use of the HOME button.
I've tried multiple methods, including removing the battery, VOL + & -, etc.
Please help!!!
