MOD-CASE

We are a company based in Australia, but offering FREE international postage on all orders from our website.
MOD-CASE provides you with premium quality phone cases for various smart phones based around environmentally sustainable wood products. Billions has been spent on redesigning of the Galaxy to result in the S4 as we know it, thats why our cases are designed to complement your phone, not insult it and provide a balanced combination achieving the best in both design and functionality.
Our composite cases for the Galaxy S4 are on their way to us, with final hand-sanding and inspecting being completed. These cases are a composite between a rubberised polycarbonate framework with a real wood back that not only looks amazing but is made with wood of high density allowing protection, but still retaining properties of wood allowing for shock absorption when dropped from height.

To get an idea on looks, check out the iPhone cases on our website as they are of similar design.

The thing that helps set our product apart from so many others is that we are marketing ourselves as a brand, not just a company with products...that is to say we aim to achieve a level of attention to detail above and beyond many others...even things down to the ratio of lines in our logo was scrutinised, as was our choice of manufacturer after ordering so many samples.

Having products based around wood, one thing we are massively proud of is our environmental input: For every tree used in the production of our cases, 10 trees are planted in a region devastated by bush fire through an association with the Arbor Day foundation.
The wood we use is also grown to a grade of quality suitable for production use, in particular the bamboo being used in these S4 cases is Moso Bamboo, using hand selected bamboo grown to consumer standard quality- more information about our wood and environmental return can be found here in our blog

We are taking pre-orders for these composite cases as they are going to be available soon, with pre-orders coming in from Australia through to California. There will be a limited number available in our First Edition Galaxy S4 cases so get in quick to pre-order yours. Head over to our website and feel free to leave absolutely any feedback you have...we are open to ideas and always looking to improve.
Thanks guys

Are the S4 cases gonna have the more flat look, like the Iphone case and the Spigen Neo hybrid case or is gonna be more curved like the S3 cases you guys had before??

We were actually tossing up this concept when we were looking at designs offered by others, and in the end decided to go with the similar shape as our iPhone cases, as the S4 form factor is definitely more likened to an iPhone-esk shape with a more rectangular design.
Plus, using the flat-sided construct allows for our cases to be as thin as possible without compromising any strength...I actually had a phone call from a customer today who dropped her iPhone in one of our composite cases from head on (she was on the phone) and it landed directly on a single corner of her phone on the footpath "The mod-case saved my phone 100%" - which made me quite happy because the corners were one point of worry, though we tested this it still made us nervous. The wood and the rubberised polycaronate served their purpose well and her phone was saved without a mark and the mod-case still totally intact.
Happy days!

Sounds great. From a purely aesthetic point of view, i love the way that look of the iphone cases are. I'm looking forward to this run of cases. Hope to see different woods eventually.

We definitely will - we are looking to expand our range not only in woods and colours, but also providing cases for other high-end smart phones.
The only limitation is essentially funding...being a startup business, we are still very much in the red but quickly on our way up.
In the case of wood selection for the S4, it was a matter of timing though...our manufacturer uses different equipment for bamboo as compared to other woods so could only offer us bamboo now and we decided not to wait and simply order them early and look to expand!

Stay tuned, I will announce on here before anywhere else that the bamboo S4 cases are available !

I've seen wooden phone cases before and wonder about two things:
What happens if you drop it? Does it crack? It's a very thin wood.
and what drop/cushion protection is there for the phone itself?
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see any cushion.

With a wooden case, there is no direct 'cushion' like if you were to buy an oversized jelly bean and stick your phone in it - however the protection offered by our cases in terms of drop-protection comes from a few properties of our cases:
- The wood used: We use wood that absorbs shock. The wood grains selected for our cases are around the middle or bottom half of the range of potential wood densities facilitating this property. Rosewood is the densest wood we currently use, but even then it is still less then 1 x 10*3 kg/m*3.

- Wood is living: So once wood is harvested and dried out, processed etc. there are air pockets left where living cells etc once were, and microscopic tubules known as xylem and phloem all of which leave behind invisible pockets of space in which the surrounding wood can compress etc when force is applied

- The construct: The rubberised polycarbonate is not a shock absorbing layer, it is a direct-impact and stretch protecting layer, thus in the case of 'dropping your phone', does not serve a specific function, however the construction of the Composite cases is in a way that almost manipulates the wood to add a layer of protection through the polycarbonate. If you drop you phone on the corner for instance - the polycarbonate actually protrudes into a cavity in the back of the solid wood panel at a right angle in each corner. This allows for the force of a drop to be at least partially dissipated through to the wood rather than relying on the polycarbonate.

We've tested the cases a fair bit, and asked for reports from customers and have had multiple, multiple episodes of phones being dropped and 1 instance of a case cracking and that was an all wood S3 case...by all means, the wood is not invisible - theres is a risk of cracking it if dropped from a height. But, would you rather risk cracking a $39 case (that will still be usable despite a crack), or cracking a LCD digitiser on a $800 phone rendering it unusable?
Our goal is to produce elegant looking cases with a purpose of protecting your smart phone, not to produce an invisible case as that would result in sacrificing both form and functionality from our view.

Thanks for the question, I love an opportunity to explain a bit about our cases - points of weakness are something we are analysing for our prototype case design that is in the (slow) works!

Good answer! It's is a cool looking case. I like wood, and sorta makes sense on the cushion part. And for sure wouldn't show fingerprints and dirt. And just looks cool.
Looks slippery though, needs some gripz! lol
Good luck with it!

Hence the rubberized polycarbonate. Still not the grippiest case in the hands, but enough to get a relatively good hold on it whilst still allowing easy entry/exit from the pockets ha

Hey guys - if your interested in an unbiased review of the MOD-CASE Composite (which is the same design we are using for the S4 cases) then check this out:

Mod-Case Rosewood + Black Polycarbonate Composite Case for iPhone 5 | Bane Tech.

Theres an embedded YouTube video review on the page also.
We sent Josh a case to review and told him to be totally honest so we can use any positive and/or negative feedback! He loved the case and we are definitely stoked.

Any chance of a Rosewood case for the Galaxy S4? I like the look of the darker, richer wood better.

Definitely possible and something we are pushing for with our manufacturer...they are in the process of setting up the facilities to get the bulk of the rosewood cut to shape with CNC machine so that the hand-refinements and sanding are a simpler task!
