Can never have all emails marked as unread

Hi All

Just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini as S4 mini met a watery death and I was waiting for the S6 mini before then but who knows if that will ever surface in the UK.

Anyhoo, am trying to start off keeping my email notifications to zero and either deleting or marking them as read as they come in. However, when I clear them down more historical come into the display at the bottom of the list and flag up as being new emails.
Hope you might have some suggestions.

if your using gmail only
when i check my emails i have like 100 that i need to move to my spam box but until i do it, i just archive it and delete from there. if you need to know how to archive just swipe at the email in the list.
