Number in oval keeps appearing on screen

Title says it. Here is a screenshot:



Just above the messages you can see a grey oval with a 0 in it. It appears about every 10 seconds when the screen in on and stays on the screen for about a second or two. Sometimes it is another number. It as happening intermittently, but today it keeps appearing. I have no clue what it is - it is not clickable. I have rebooted a few times in hopes it would go away but it is still there.

Update - it does not wake the screen, but seems to keep the screen from going to sleep.

What messenger app is that? It appears to be a message count, similar to the one above your email icon.

That is the native SMS app. It is not a part of that notification as appears in the same spot onscreen even when that Icon is not on the screen (i.e) lock screen. Today I got a 797 number.

I thought I figured out what it was. I thought it was the silly Verizon accessories notification that was causing it. I turned off the notifications and it went away - or so it seemed. This morning they are back.
