I did some searching and found that only sprint's version of the s5 gives access to a real working fm radio (not streaming digital via using my limited data plan) by using a headphone cable for an antenna.
I'm thinking that all s5 actually has an fm chip, but the other carriers disabled them, specifically Verizon. before I go ahead and root my phone to see if there is any way to get a real working fm radio, I decided to ask if anyone has actually done this.
I figured all the phones hardware was the same but each carrier actually decides what will be avail...which is why there are different versions, but the same phone.
Your help is appreciated.
