Odd lock screen behaviour on upgrade to 5

My phone got the update to 5.0 a little while ago (Virgin mobile phone, Telstra sim, Australia), since then I have had the blocks (in place of numerals and letters on the unlock keypad and some letters elsewhere on the lock screen) you see in the screen shot below, but I also lost the ability to pause and play music from the lock screen. I can fix the blocks for a few hours by rebooting the phone, nowhere in settings can I find out how to bring the music integration back to the lock screen, any help appreciated.

I have also experienced that problem with my S5 (Verizon). I think it's a glitch with the update, because after I got a new software update after the original lollipop update the problem stopped entirely. So until your carrier releases a new software update, I think it will probably continue to do that.

As for the music widget, I'd look to see if it's enabled in the music settings (I know my lollipop update did a couple of odd things to my phone). Hopefully this helps!
