High resolution video - what's the point?

Maybe I am missing something but what's the point of shooting in anything remotely high resolution? There's no HDMI output to view on TV and the files are ridiculously large so if you want to export them anywhere they get massively compressed.

I suppose the only benefit is i you have a large, ultra high resolution monitor and want to connect direct USB to your PC and wait for them to transfer

There are two use cases:

1) 4K laptops and monitors (you pretty much can't tell the difference 8'-9' away from a TV)

2) You want to extract 8.3mp screen captures. 1080p video gets 2mp, and 1440p gets 3.7mp captures.

Easy

- for uploading to the internet for a good viewing experience
- you can put them on your PC as you said to view them
- they have cables that can plug into your device then go to an HDMI to display

If you auto backup to Google or OneDrive, you can download the videos to your PC. There are also apps like AirDroid that allow you to browse your phone from a PC Browser and transfer it via Wifi.

I did back up my vids to Drive and themn when I downloaded to my PC they were very compressed (or at least I think they are as the filles were zipped by Drive and the file sizes on my PC are very small (i.e 45 sec vid is only 125K whereas the original is 500MB)

Check your backup settings. File size should be on Large. I you make it any smaller, it will compress before uploading.

OneDrive doesn't have any compression settings. The 4K clips stayed 4K.

I believe they uploaded to Drive in full size but when I download to PC from Drive, they got zipped and compressed. Are the backup settings you refer to in Drive or elsewhere?

Just t be clear I am using Google Drive not Microsoft OneDrive

I just downloaded a 4K clip from Google+ Photos, they it down with original resolution and file size.
