I'm new to the android world, but have a Nexus 5x, and I am trying to get a small tablet for my kids. Amazon has the tab 4 for $130 which is a reasonable price for what I want. I am just concerned about it being outdated too quickly since it runs kit kat. Any other options in that price point? I thought of an amazon Fire HD. Thanks

Those were released about a year and a half ago, and at that price point it's tough to beat the Fire line. You can find some deals on the Shield (which is an awesome tablet) but that's mostly the almost-two-year-old model, and I believe BestBuy is selling the newer one at 200 dollars.

If it's just for your kids and you don't mind downloading the games from Amazon's storefront (the Fire doesn't have access to Play Services unless you root) then it's a very good choice. The Tab 4 isn't exactly ancient but you can see how Samsung's efforts for updating will be focused on the Tab S line. The 7 model, as far as I know, still hasn't received the Lollipop update like it's 'big brother', the 10.1 model. But if that one was updated, you should at least expect Lollipop in the coming months since the LTE version of the 7 inch model IS out now.

I just bought the tab 4 7 inch from amazon on Thursday. I received it yesterday. I got the sprint 4g Lte version. The lollipop 5.1.1 update was available for it. I updated it through the settings as soon as I got it.
