Custom Android ROM and phone compatibility question?

I want to install some custom rom on my phone but I'm uncertain about a few things.
I see on this link:
How to Find Custom ROMs for Your Android Phone « Android.AppStorm

That there are OEM Custom roms and AOSP roms.. I want to use AOSP.

My question is, if a particular custom rom is AOSP and it is based on the operating system of my current phone (Android KitKat 4.4.2) then will the custom rom work on my phone?

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Hi, so a couple things I wanna clarify,

1. If the ROM is listed for your device then it should be supported for.your device
2. If it is supported for your device then the version number should not matter even if it is the same hardware
