IMAP Email Recent Message over 200 does not seem to work

using the stock email client.

it has options for 'Recent Messages' 24, 50, ... 200, Total.

if I set it to 200, everything seems to work fine, but it only shows me the most recent 200 messages, and I would like to have much more than that available.

if I set it to 'Total' it still shows only 200 messages, but it shows them all as Unread?

I have a Galaxy S3 and for the life of me, I can't get an email message that is older than 1 month to show up in a folder using the default email client using IMAP. I have tried a hostgator, gmail and Modwest, all working IMAP accounts. Using the gmail account and the gmail app. No Problem. Strangely, If I know what to search for, I call pull old messages. I tried the same thing on an older Motorola Droid and it works fine using the default android email client. This appears to be a Galaxy S3 problem.
