tool bar backlighting

Tmobile placed me in anHTC Amaze thankfully and I gave up the LG Gx2. Amaze is great. However, the tool bar is light sensored and I can't see the icons sometimes. If I hold my hand over the phone they light up. Is there a way for me to have them backlit, come on every time and stay on till the screen times out or sleeps. I already tried taking the brighgtness off automatic. In a dark room they light up but in a simi dark room they dont and I cant see them.
