$10 extra charge mandatory?

Do your homework people. T-Mobile HSPA+ data is faster than Sprint's Wimax, has a bigger coverage area, and doesn't cost any extra (on T-Mobile's plans that are already as cheap or even cheaper than Sprint's pre Wimax plans) and they don't even require a contract.

Everyone saying Sprint is still the cheapest even with the extra fees is full of it.

I'm just waiting for T-Mobile to launch a phone I want- whch they have already said they will do at some point this year.

One thing that seems to be missing from this discussion is this:

So they are not just charging $10 extra a month for 4G, they are charging the $10 extra because they expect this phone to be a data hog, regardless of which network you are connecting to.

Yeah but you're still missing the point... They already advertise unlimited 3G data with their everything data plans... So exactly how does Sprint justify this logic to a customer who wants to purchase the EVO 4G where there's only 3G coverage? They have no excuse, plain and simple..

For any customer with only 3G coverage, you might as well put the HTC EVO in the "elitist category" where you have the privilege to pay more for nothing.

OK but the so called unlimited 3G data is a 5GB cap, whereas this is supposed to be totally unlimited, who knows.

Even if I wasn't in a 4g (or soon to be) market I wouldn't mind paying the extra $10. Sprints business is selling service, not phones.

slim to none.... why, you want tethering, you get the $30 extra wi-fi hot spot...

I thought the idea of the hotspot was to share your connection with up to 8 other people. That I can see adding an extra charge for. But $10 dollars for your own usage...why not include tethering?

Honestly all of this could be fixed if they changed the $10/mo charge to this:

Premium data Plan -- uncapped data for phone and tethering and 4G access.

If you don't want to use 4G don't pay for it. If you use 3G and you go over the 5GB cap then you are automatically charged $10 extra that month. Everybody wins, and everyone is happy. Sprint will sell more phones and will be reimbursed for excessive data usage. People who don't use a lot of wireless, don't have to pay extra for an unused service.

Ok so they are charging this fee simply because of all the phone can do, right? (data hog)

As WE ALL KNOW, in a few months there will be a phone that is up to par with the EVO, or surpasses it. Thats just the way technology works. Are they going to add that $10 premium for those phones too? So pretty much sprint is just jacking up their prices. It has nothing to do with the phone itself. It would be stupid to add the fee to the EVO then simply dismiss it for another equally endowed phone. 4g will be the new standard in a few years. What will they do then?

So I can kinda sorta understand this. Is there a way to block the phone from the 4G network?
And I can understand being a data-hog, saying that while sitting in front of my computer listening to Pandora over EVDO even though my Wi-Fi router is in front of me, cause I run a lot of bandwidth a month.

I don't like the idea of paying it, but it's small change in the grand scheme of things. 33 cents a day.

As long as it doesn't affect the other lines in the family plan I'm still in. That's $45 ea line before my discounts. Great deal. Yeah I'm gonna make the others chips in for my phone call me what you want :)

Everyone that have a problem with the $10 add-on should call and write Sprint an email complaning about the extra chargeand hopefully if enough ppl do that maybe we cn get them to drop the charge. I'm going to call them and write them several times befor release date because I barely have a 3g coverage where I live.
