1000$ phone - no security updates

I bought mine from AT&T, so while it's on Nov 13th patch, Dec or Jan aren't far behind.

Can we sdmit there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to any of this, it these ubiquitous threads.

Ah, but it seems like urban legend where we assume a pattern where non exists, too.

I use to ascribe to the carrier is unlocked theory. Until it wasn't.

What I do hope is Project Treble eases the rollout security updates as well as better, longer support.

Project treble won't come to the Note8, it's already been announced. But hopefully it helps with future devices.

Actually it isn't an assumption and .. there is a pattern... but you're welcome to believe what you want :P. I have watched as Google ones update every month and the carrier variants sometimes get it, skip a month, skip 4 months, never get it, etc. It is like a roll of the dice.

Sure, but it shows price doesn't dictate updates. It also shows how much testing needs to go on just for the few to hundreds of users on a particular server, within the same organization.

With the mobile devices, you have multiple carriers, each having made different changes, adding/removing apps, changing/removing settings, the patches require extensive testing before pushing out to millions of devices, with any number of differences.

Yes, these all sounds good arguements, but - a lot of people are talking about SIM free? I don't have your knowledge or experience but I do understand the arguement (up to a point) about price & service and ongoing support.
And a really expensive, top of the range, flagship product should have first class support and surely Samsung write the stuff and then pass it to carriers to add bloat or whatever in the first place - so why don't the SIM free, outright purchase people, get it at the same time as the cariers?

I'm going to assume there are subtle differences between the carrier free models per country, however, it does seem those models should be able to get their updates when the updates are released to the carriers.

To me, that still has nothing to do with the price paid for the device. To my knowledge there is nothing in the TOS or warranty that states the more you paid for the device the better your support will be. That seems more like an emotional argument, you feel that you should get more respect because you paid more.

What happens when the same device goes on sale, or simply gets older, should you get first crack at updates because you paid $900 when your neighbor only paid $500?

If your vehicle cost more than mine and we both drop them off at the dealership overnight, should yours get fixed first just because yours is more expensive?
Same question using houses we both bought in the same community.
I don't believe in making people a lower class or priority based on finances.

Obviously that changes if you specifically paid more for the extra or better support, such as first class seating on an airline.

Your AT&T Note8 should already be in the December security update. That was released a few weeks ago.

I sold my Note 8 and got a Pixel XL 2 to get the latest security updates because of my comments above about being in cyber-security, and being concerned about new exploits like BlueBorne. Well, the monthly security updates from Google also frequently break things - not important things - just Bluetooth, WiFi... Frustrating. Now I'm thinking I made a mistake and should get back to the Note. Btw, some would tell me to switch to the iPhone. I hate iOS, but more than that, iOS updates of late are also breaking a lot of things. I get the feeling that Samsung does additional testing for the monthly updates because they've seen regular monthly security updates not have enough regression testing done by Google themselves, so they do more. But maybe I'm giving them more credit than they deserve.

Nope this is what myself and others keep telling people such as urself. Yeah Google will have more regular updates because they make it but Samsung does have to test for their devices and has been pretty good with releasing them not too far behind Google. Better than other Manufacturers. People are saying sometime this week the N8 will start seeing the January patch being pushed out. People just need to have a little patience.

Samsung and the carriers have to test. Hence the delays.

Yes, that's what I said. Or were you agreeing with me. Lol
Well you said Samsung.. as if they're the only ones to test. You didn't mention that on carrier variants that carriers have to test it afterwards as well.

When's the last time you've gotten malware or a virus of any type on your mobile device.

I am by no means saying security updates aren't important, but a lot of the time those updates come at the expense of battery life, the phone being janky, and slowing down.

I will take a relatively smooth running phone over blazing quick updates. Unless you own a Pixel which I think is far over priced for what it is with more stock like Android experience you should know you're likely are not going to get quick updates.

You want blazing fast updates get a Pixel or an iPhone and even then those quick updates will come at the expense of you having very stripped down hardware and software.
