16 gigs is just way too small, I don't want to put stuff on the cloud.

This complaint is so frustrating. No one forced you into buying this phone. You willingly bought the phone but complain about buying the phone? If you need a crap ton of space and complain about how "unreliable" the cloud is, why did you, or any of you, buy a phone with a max of 16gb?

They made a phone for the average user and most users don't need 32 gigs of space just like most drivers don't nerd a car to go zero to 60 in 4 seconds. If you knew that 16g wasn't enough why did you buy it?

I bought my Nexus 4 because I wanted an unlocked, international capable phone that would get updates direct from Google to use when I'm traveling and don't have access to my computer, or cellular network, but still want access to my media. This need outweighed the lack of storage. I would have loved to have the opportunity to get a Nexus with more storage (and removable storage and a battery), but it's not available.

You're missing a third camp. Those who are OK with 16GB (or even 8GB) and never swap out anything, because that's enough space for them. I'm aware that some people want more storage and I have no problem with that, just as I have no problem with people choosing a 10" (or larger) tablet instead of the 7" that I prefer. However, I reserve the right to roll my eyes at people who buy a 7" tablet and complain the screen is just too small... or buy a 10" tablet and complain it doesn't fit in their pocket.

I'm one of those who prefer's a 10" tablet over a 7" one. So I bought the Kindle Fire when it first came out. Although I regretted my purchase after a few months, I didn't go on a forum and complain about it. I realized that I did it as a test and it was my very first touch screen device. I try not to do much typing on my N4 either and only use landscape for typing. I do things bassackward and am my own worst enemy. I did buy the N10 before the N4 which I've only had a week. Oh yeah, my N10 has 32gb and that's what I use as my multimedia device. I used to be suckered in by all the software upgrades and that can get quite expensive. You're hearing this from someone who's first pc was a commodore 64--that's not 64gb, 64mb, but 64kb! Sorry, but I don't see any point in being judgemental of those who want 16, 32, 64 or whatever. We all know that those and more will be here sooner than later. Should I buy now or wait for the next upgrade? Answer: How badly do you want to use the device? And don't forget about those,. like me, in the test (4th camp?). We don't really know what we need and maybe even not what we really want. Still, we have to start somewhere to avail ourselves of technology that could really benefit us. OK, old geezer shuts up now.:)

I have been using my Nexus 4 for about 5 months now and I can't get over the biggest issue with the phone, 16 gigs is just way too small.
Don't let the Fanboys catch you saying that.

They will tell you that you are being too demanding, and that the cloud is awesome and you just don't appreciate how far technology has come.

Your response is equally annoying. The fact that no one forced us to buy this phone does not mean it should be immune to criticism.

You willingly bought the phone but complain about buying the phone?
We are not entitled to voice opinions about a phone we bought?

Lots of people browse forums like this looking for user opinions to make purchase decisions. So yes, it is relevant. As a potential owner, I wanted opinions from people who owned the phone. What is the point of complaining about other people's opinions?

Agreed. Also the N4 is meant to be a phone. It is meant to have must have apps, and content that you NEED to have with you at all times. No one needs to have 40 gigs of music, ten 1080p movies, 500 apps/games, and 7000 pictures with them at all times.
According to who? Who decided what amount of space is good enough for everyone? Do you work for Apple?

I was under the impression that the point of a smartphone was to make my life easier and more convenient.

You need to have a media consumption device with you, they make the N7.
So instead of just expanding my phone capabilities I should cart around two devices instead?

At the end of the day though, if 12.93 GB of space is not enough, don't buy the phone.
Maybe I, as the end user, decided the phone is good enough that I am willing to put up with this limitation. Have you considered that possibility?

Considering you only paid 349 dollars for a phone, I think it is fair to say its fairly immune to criticism regarding storage space. Find another phone with that quality screen, ram, and more memory for 349.

Complain about the software... fine
Complain about the stupid glass back.... fine
Complain about the overheating.... fine
Complain about the poor kernal leading to bad battery life... fine

But whining about space, when there are alternative phones and services is dumb. Google is probably losing money on this phone/subsidizing it to get you the price point you need. So yes, keep complaining and pretend its justified.

A six pick of beer isn't enough for me, so I bought a twelve pack. I feel smart. :)

There are cheaper phones that have SD. Lets not pretend this was a cost issue. It was nerd politics.

LOL, ok. I agree that for a cheap phone it has the best specs. That does not make the lack of expandable storage a good thing.

But whining about space, when there are alternative phones and services is dumb.
Until recently we had no other options for a Vanilla Android device. In order to get better storage, we had to be saddled with crap like Sense or Touchwiz.

I don't get why our "whining" about storage is less offensive or annoying than your whining about other people's opinions.

Google is probably losing money on this phone/subsidizing it to get you the price point you need.
Here's a thought...why not just make a version of the phone with more storage for more money? Then everyone would be happy, right?

But we both know that cost is NOT the reason that SD was left out.

I guess it doesn't matter now anyway. With vanilla versions of the One and S4 becoming available, Google's nerd politics becomes a lot less relevant. Hooray for choices.

Probably best to do your research before buying this phone. This phone is 100% google which also means extensive cloud service usage. It is what it is. I can't take anyone seriously that already bought this phone and is now complaining about it's basic set features after the fact.

Which is exactly why threads like this are a good thing. Someone considering a nexus 4 purchase deserves to know the potential annoyances of a 16 gig memory limit.

So why are so many people complaining about it? Why do they care if someone else is complaining about storage?

Well, my post is also helpful in getting people to check if the phone specs will work for them before being stuck with the phone and getting berated on a message board. :)

People should not be berated merely for expressing an opinion.

I have no idea why so many people get so defensive when someone expresses an opinion about a phone on here.

First of all, I dont disagree expandable storage wouldve been great. However, Google doesnt want it. And its their phone they can build it how they like. If you dont like it, there are other hardware vendors who offer SD like Samsung or more memory like HTC. Just be prepared to pay $300 and $250 respectively.

Also sharing your opinion is one thing. The OP acknowledges the fact that cloud services are a viable alternative, but he/she is just being lazy. There are ways to pin your music, put a movie or two on it. Does it require an extra step? Yes.

Lastly Google couldve made a 32 gb edition but at the time they were already losing money on it and probably made the decision it wasnt cost effective. I think Google understands how to balance taking a loss for an eventual gain a bit better than the rest of us. They want cheap but still good devices. There was an article I read that said how the high end smartphone market is fully saturated and the big growth will be in the $300 range phones. Google probably noticed this and this phone couldve been their answer to it well before the rest of us made that connection.

While it wouldve been nice to have a 32gb option I think Google has a good reason not to have it. In terms of SD card support, I guess its politics even tho I am not really sure what you mean by it

I am really POd that my Toyota Camry doesn't accelerate as well as a new Corvette.

I paid for this phone. I can criticize it's shortcomings (and Google's decisions) if I like.

Who decided that Google should be immune to criticism on here?

Until recently, none of them offered Vanilla Android. As of right now, they still don't.

LOL! You could also use a feature phone in place of your smartphone...are you just too lazy?

There are ways to pin your music, put a movie or two on it. Does it require an extra step? Yes.
It is not just convenience (though that alone would justify the criticism). The stupid cloud is not available all the time. SD is.

Lastly Google couldve made a 32 gb edition but at the time they were already losing money on it and probably made the decision it wasnt cost effective.
I am willing to bet if they simply charged another 50 bucks for it, people would have flocked to it in doves. Just as they did with the 16 gig version.

But Google wants us to use the stupid cloud, because that is part of their "vision". And restricting our memory is a means to that end. The decision was because of nerd politics, not cost.

While it wouldve been nice to have a 32gb option I think Google has a good reason not to have it. In terms of SD card support, I guess its politics even tho I am not really sure what you mean by it
It means that the reason behind the decision had to do with ideology (getting people to use phones the way google wants them to), instead of cost or other non-ideological factors.

If toyota could have added that acceleration at little or no cost, but chose not to because they thought you should drive slower, you would be within your rights to be annoyed with them.

Of course you could just buy a corvette...but if you do, the only color you can pick is bright pink, and the only radio station you can shoose is Easy listening. Enjoy your choice.

It's probably not "just a little cost", and if someone buys a phone that clearly states that it has 16gigs of memory, that is not expandable, then they shouldn't complain about it after they own it. They should learn to grow up and live with their decisions they made instead of whining to everyone.

You paid for a phone with 16GB memory and no SD card. You made that choice. It was clearly advertised as such. You weren't tricked. You paid for the right to have a 16 gb phone with no SD card support. And as I said, the price point makes them immune from storage criticism. Google made this phone at a loss and you want them to add a feature that will further cannibalize their business. Sounds pretty irrational to me.

Google isnt an hardware manufacturer who has the ability to make all the variety of Nexi they want. You get one phone a year and they make it how they feel is the best way to get somewhat of a return investment. For all you know the 32 GB variant and wasnt worth it for them. Given that they didnt anticipate it to be a big success (and compared to phones like HTC One and S4, it is kind of a fail) it probably wasnt cost effective.

The entirety of your argument is that you think it wouldve cost them nothing to make a 32 GB model, but you really have no idea about their cost structure. Memory isnt cheap and not only that but you have to look beyond the cost of the parts. Look at manufacturing costs. From what I remember, manufacturing variants add to costs.

Its like getting a Lambo for the price of a Camry but half the HP. You are still getting one heck of a deal.

Therefore discussion is ended and I am not allowed an opinion on the nexus 4. By purchasing the nexus 4 I apparently ceded all rights to ever criticize Google about anything ever again. LOL

The Nexus 4 is not a religion. It is a phone.

And as I said, the price point makes them immune from storage criticism.
I disagree.

Because allowing SD would not have added to the cost significantly IMO, and I do not believe that cost was the reason it was excluded.

Google isnt an hardware manufacturer who has the ability to make all the variety of Nexi they want.
Google determined the specs and capabilities of the Nexus 4. Not LG. LG just built it to their specifications. Google was the one who decided that SD should not be an option.

The entirety of your argument is that you think it wouldve cost them nothing to make a 32 GB model
You could make the exact same argument for the 16 gig version...so why did they make the 16 gig model?

Its like getting a Lambo for the price of a Camry but half the HP. You are still getting one heck of a deal.
I agree, which is why I bought one anyway. That does not mean I need to STFU when it comes to opinions on the nexus 4.
