1st impressions and review of the Tab Pro 8.4 Updated 2/14

Re: 1st impressions of the Tab Pro 8.4

Samsung Book cover case now on back-order as of 3pm today. Shipping ETA end of February. :(

How do you find the size of the device in comparison to a 10.1" or 7" tablet? Do you prefer this form factor?

For what its worth I have the 8.0 tab 3 and I think the 8"size is the best size for a tablet.

Picked this up at Best Buy to replace a LG G Pad and so far it's pretty disappointing.
Screen is great, it's very fast in spite of the horrible UI and if you have a 5gz ac router it's the fastest tab ever.
But the build quality is horrible, screen glass is flush on one corner and recessed on the other three.
If you try and use it in landscape mode your thumb is constantly hitting the buttons on the bezel on the right.
The bezel is cheap plastic and has a protruding lip that makes holding it a pain after awhile.
It's really designed as a portrait use tab not really landscape like the LG G Pad is.
I'll mess with it for a week and probably return it and wait and see is Google pops up with a Nexus 8.
If you have any ? my last three tabs were I pad mini, LG gpad and this.

I had to return mine this morning as the back became loose, I didn't pick up another as at $426 with tax I think I'll wait for an Amazon sale or Newegg.

Really nice tablet with not very premium build quality, and that is what made me not go for another right now

I have distinct lag when pushing home button from an app. Anyone else?

As I have mentioned on another thread within the "pro series tablet section" ever since samsung started making their devices in Vietnam and not China the quality has went horribly down! I remember when samsungs were made in china , I had several devices and they had really good build quality. I noticed since the tab 3 line they are now making them in vietnam and the quality IMO is getting real shoddy.

Don't you mean Korea? I don't think I have ever seen a Samsung device made in Vietnam.

No, the older devices (tab 2 and prior) were made in China. Since tab 3 everything is made in Vietnam.

It's because it's trying to detect a double tap for S-Voice. This is the case with all Samsung devices. To disable this, double-tap your home button to launch S-Voice and in Settings disable the double-tap detection. This will make the home button respond quickly.

I don't think the build quality is poor. Seems very solid to me. Very happy with my purchase so far.

Not to deviate from the discussion of the Pro 8.4 device, this is not true for every recent Samsung tablet. My Galaxy Note 8.0 says on the box "Made in Korea by Samsung". I have the GT-N5110.

The device is pretty nice. Screen is sharp and build quality is good but is this probably going back.

Reason I got this was because my Nexus 7 started to stop working. I am still under warranty and that will be going back to ASUS. I cannot justify $400 dollars with no pen or wireless charging. I do not like the revamped UI and they still throw their applications in your face.

I like to lay down and watch moves on my tablet and felt the Nexus 7 was a perfect size for this and fairly light. This was a little heavier and bigger and felt too uncomfortable. I will stick with the Nexus 7 for now and get the new one that will probably come out in July with a price tag below $300 with competitive specs and stock Android

I stopped by Best Buy today to have a look and spent about 30 minutes with one. I really like it, of course I've been carrying a Note 3 around since they became available on T-Mobile so I may be a bit biased. I returned an iPad Mini with Retina display just a few days ago but I didn't want to have to deal with iTunes again but I really liked the form factor. It was a 128GB T-Mobile model so I'm going to hold off until the 32GB T-Mobile model is available. It seemed pretty solid to me but again I may be biased. Nothing though will compare to the iPad Mini in terms of a solid feel. That thing is built like a tank. I wanted to like it since I had owned an iPad before but having to deal with ITunes is just such a pain in the ****.

Got mine at BB first thing Thursday morning. Have seen none of the physical problems that others have seen. Super fast, not hard to hold, no gaps or the back not falling off. Battery seems good enough so far. The UI is strange. The Magazine portion is nothing more than one page of 6 panels of Flip board categories. News, Technologies etc.... Not all that exciting and don't know if it has an affect on the battery life. And can't figured out how to get rid of it, must be baked it. I'm trying out 2 different launchers. Nova and Google now launcher both work fine. I'm going to do a battery test tomorrow with the built-in launcher after a good nights charge. Will post results. One last thing, the size. I live my life in cargo pants and shorts. This is the largest tablet that will still fit in my pockets. What can be better than that. ;)
