2.2 is out on the captivate

Just saw that story on the front page. That's great news. Think I'm gonna lurk the Captivate forum for a while.

I just watched a walk through video on Engadget. Here's what caught my eye. Quadrant still chokes on the i/o test. Looks like the lag fix will still be needed. The installed ram is still showing 331mb. It appears all the comments suggesting we will see the full 512mb on Froyo are incorrect. My oh my.

it still might not be a final build

also, it's possible that later froyo releases for other galaxy S phones (like fascinate, epic, etc) might include additional features that this release doesn't have.

I thought the Fascinate (maybe all Galaxy S?) was different in that 128MB was dedicated to the GPU and that's why we see 325MB RAM instead of 512MB (even though it really does have 512MB). I thought that was one of the reasons it performs/appears so fast. I'm just a Android noob and regurgitating what I've read so it's not like I can really explain it any better.

The way Samsung implemented memory, utilizing their OneNAND technology is why the OS doesn't recognize the 512MB. It has nothing to do with Froyo.

The I/O portion of quadrant is slow because of the filesystem Samsung chose to implement. Froyo doesn't change underlying file systems. The only real solution currently doing this is Voodoo, and while the 2.2 port will take some time, it will resolve that issue until (if) Samsung ever does.

RyanZA's lag-fix will still work as a (slightly effective) band-aid, but will give inaccurate quadrant scores along with a tiny bit of OS speedup. Why people still use that is beyond me, but it's your device, do what you'd like.

does it releasing for captivate mean it should be here in coming weeks for verizon too? not sure how much the galaxy phones differ..or if the captivate version can be hacked to work on the fascinate

2.2 for ATT Early Oct,
2.2 for Tmo Mid-Late Oct,
2.2 for Sprint, Oct-Nov..
2.2 for Verizon.....January-Feb If we're lucky

I know they said fall for the update, but I was a BB owner and know how "quick" verizon puts updates out compared to the other vendors, despite them saying only a few weeks......

*Small disclaimer, this is in no way fact or backed by any articles. Just my geussing on when the 2.2 will be released...

The fascinate is the most different galaxy s phone, so I can only imagine 2.2 would be out much later. I mean they have to adapt and bug fix froyo for all galaxy phones. Then they have to completely abort the OS with that wretched Bing. Just getting that Bing trash to not work on our 2.1 fascinate took an extra month and a half. I would expect the same delay with froyo.
