2 Bionics in 1 Month

About a month ago my Bionic (purchased on release day) started having difficulty charging. Prior I was getting random reboots but this was different. When placed in the dock I was getting a message that the battery wasn't recognized and to replace it with a Motorola battery (this happened with both the original battery and the extended battery that I purchased from Verizon).

There is a possibility that I may have dropped the phone just prior but I don't recall it as a major event where I was concerned that it was broken.

Verizon was great and replaced it under warranty. Other than having to reload all my apps the process went smoothly.

Saturday night I dropped my "new" Bionic when I was getting out the car. It fell off my lap and the top right corner of the phone hit the street. The screen shattered. It didn't just crack...small chunks of glass are missing in the corner.

The phone continued to work through last night but it looked like there were charging issues similar to my last phone. I was right. Once the battery drained it was toast. The phone won't charge at all.

I was able to connect with a decent 2nd tier customer service person at Verizon and although they can't take phones with screen issues back as a return to the warehouse, she was able to work out some credits to offset the insurance deductible. Thankfully I should have another phone tomorrow.

My concern is that there is some kind of defect in the Bionics if they are dropped. That there something becoming disconnected too easily that is interfering with the battery charging???

Has anyone else had this or a similar issue?

I know how to fix your problem, stop dropping your phones! Lol, sorry had to do it.

Would recommend getting a protective case though :)

Thanks! :)

I do have a case but keep forgetting to put it back on in the morning. I have yet to get it to work well w/ the dock when I am using the extended battery. It fits, but doesn't charge in the dock.

This will now be my motivation to remember the case!

I guess what bugs me is that I had an OG Droid for close to 2 years and never had any problems with minor drops but they seem to be fatal w/ the Bionic.

Hehe. Could be worse, drop the iphone and the whole thing shatters

I have dropped mine a few times, with and without my case on it, and it has suffered no ill effect from it. I guess i have been lucky. They weren't MAJOR drops and I managed to keep it from hitting the floor/concrete directly with my foot, and i never put it in my lap in the car, can't tell you how many people i have heard tell me they have dumped their phones off their laps when getting out of the car.

This has yet to happen to me and I have dropped my phone a few times also! I guess I'm just lucky! :) (For now..)

Have you tried replacing your chargers? wallplugs?

No...but the first replacement phone a few weeks ago was JUST the phone itself. No battery, cover, SIM card or SD card.

This replacement swapped out everything but the SD card...although they sent me a BlackBerry charger instead of a Motorola. ???

Verizon also sent me a new extended battery so both of my batteries are new. Do you think it worthwhile to change the chargers too? I have four regular chargers (1 from my original Droid, another from my dock for the Droid and one from my Bionic and my Bionic dock) and a car charger so it would be expensive to replace.

You've tried all 4 chargers and it's doing it?

PS. I'd have called back and yelled at them for sending me a BB charger.. using unapproved plugs probably voids warranties..

I had the problem with all the chargers w/ the previous two phones (my first purchased on release day and the replacement they gave me about a month or so ago). So far my new phone (received last week through Asurion) is working just fine with all of my existing chargers. I suspect that the charging issue was from dropping the phone, not the charger itself.

I called Asurion and they are replacing the BB charger. I know better than to use it!
