2015, what a disappointing year

This saddens me. I had the joy of owning an xperia device and it's the best android phone I've ever seen hands down. But this recent Z4 effort (or lack thereof) gives me the impression that Sony just sighed a resounding "meh. don't care, I give up, here ya go" this year. So basically I'm left with:

  • Z4 which Sony themselves don't seem to care about (although see more about this below)
  • M9 with disappointing camera and sketchy battery life
  • S6 with either crappy battery life or battery life that only meets "OK" standards even without battery bugs
  • iPhone

So, it looks to me like I'm going to wait. I'm either going to buy a Note 5 or an iPhone 6s this Fall. If rumours about Sony having another flagship up their sleeve that's a more major update than the Z4 that's another possibility

If coming from last year's models of those device then I can see how it might be a disappointment. I wouldn't necessarily say that the year has been disappointing. The devices listed in your post are actually good, except for the Z4 which many might agree that it's not up to par.

I wouldn't call it a disappointing year. The M9 is still a great phone, S6 could very well be in the running for phone of the year (I know it's very early for that), and I'm still a huge fan of my iPhone 6 Plus. I have both the DROID Turbo and a 6 Plus and the iPhone has been getting more time than my Turbo.

Google will get things taken care of, look how bad iOS 8 was. That rollout was a complete disaster. They will probably seem like disappointing years because I think we are starting to plateau a bit on these devices.

I might have been a little premature, we'll have to wait and see how this pans out

Having moved from a Blackberry Z10 to a Verizon M9 I find the battery life an improvement. Good for me.

Camera is getting better with each update. Now working well for me.

The M9 has never overheated or got uncomfortable.

I like the M9 and after seeing a S6 fall three feet, cracking the back up, I'll stick with my new M9 for now.

Sitting here wit my 6month old Note 4 and not a single phone that has come in 2015 has made it feel old, actually its the exact opposite, I feel the Note 4 is better overall than S6/S6E, M9 and Z4, and is still the way to go if you are in the market for a new smartphone.

Not disappointed in the S6 or S6 Edge and I tend to use a lot of phones each year, in 2014 it was 8 phones. Not because they sucked or I didnt like them, I just like new tech. But IMO the S6 Edge 128GB will work for my needs for the year. Plus my wife is going back to school and I have to cut the costs somewhere, so let it be my phone hobby :(

Google IO is coming!

I look forward to a new tablet release. It might be wishful thinking though.

I use the Droid Turbo, nothing out this year makes my phone even close to obsolete

I understand how you guys feel.. I feel the same way which is why I'm holding on to my lovely M8 and upgrading next year.. This is new to me because I can't tell you how long it's been since I've kept a phone over 12 months

TBH it's only disappointing for me because I expected big changes from hTc with the M9. I wanted the renders that was released. I would be using it now but instead of my Samsung Galaxy S6 edge.

Sony just doesn't seem to care and while I don't have a problem with the hardware I can't stand their bland UI.

Samsung. I love the bold move they did. It's been a long time and fans wanted it. I did.

Who knows...you might be surprised at what the rest of the year will bring. Moto still is due to say anything official about the next X.

Not sure what you mean here. What's so dazzling about Sense once you remove the blinkfeed screen?

Yah I'm really hoping for one of Sony/Moto/Nexus to check all the boxes later this year. As the camera is not even one of my boxes, it doesn't seem like it should be that difficult. Too bad the M9 battery was an inexplicable fail.

We are well into the plateau phase. Smartphones has we know them started back around 2007 and we kind of got used to huge and dramatic increases in features, functionality and performance each and every year... sometimes even shorter. Every new generation, people picked up the new units and though "WOW!" But that rapid improvement wasn't bound to hold up. I think the turning point was around the Galaxy SIII generation. Once that gen of phones got dropped, the perceived pace of advancement slowed fairly substaintally.... CPUs can only get so much faster, screens can only get so much better, etc.

So while some might be disappointed with the current crop of phones, I look at the lineup and I'm impressed. I mean, we are up to our eyeballs with great devices.... even the 'cheap' phones today are infinitely more capable than the top of the line units we had a few years ago.

I agree. Very disappointing. I've been holding onto my Nexus 5 for HTC & LG to wow me and nothing. Although the G4 is tempting I'm not in love. I might just wait for the Note 5 and see what Google does with the new Nexus. I don't want to settle.

The year isn't over yet. It's a little premature to put that kind of label on the year. We've already had many high end phone releases so far.
