Now we know how many Xooms were shipped. Pretty easy to figure out how many have actually sold by counting the ones on the shelves, and subtracting that number from 250,000.

What's the difference? Motorola gets paid by retailers for each device shipped. AAPL counts devices shipped as "sold" as well.

It may be that about half are in Best Buy and other retailer backrooms and warehouses. That means that maybe 125,000 were actually sold which matches what the analysts had projected.

Not bad, since it went official on 2/24 and the wifi only model came out two weeks before Q1 ended.

The Xoom is kind of reminding me of the G1, not huge initial sales but like the quiet start of something big. Pretty decent considering the Xoom cost 3 to 4 x more than the G1 and isn't as much of a necessity as a phone is.

Ah in two years, we will be like, "eh, I was using android tablets when the Xoom came out "

Sales would've been better if:

A. The wifi version was available at launch

B. The device had launched with full functionality

C. The OS was a polished product

D. The developers were putting out more stable apps

People complain about the number of apps available at launch, but I think that factor is overrated. It's not like everyone downloads 3000 apps. The price isn't cheap, but it's not unreasonable given the build quality of the product. Like any other new market segment, the first generation is expensive and overbuilt, but buggy. Then, manufacturers figure how to pack more into the the product while reducing costs. It's the way of the world.

Motorola counts units shipped as units sold. If Best Buy has a bunch of them in their warehouse, then I blame them for their crappy marketing of the device. Hiding it in the laptop department but selling through the phone department has got to be the dumbest marketing move I have ever seen. Furthermore, all Motorola had to do was mimic the sales model that Apple used for the iPad. Let people buy the 3g model and carry it out of the store, and let the customer handle all activation with Verizon from the device itself.
