Hey guys,

I have some Nexus 10 and a Galaxy S4 chargers populating the house and they both output 2 amps. The Nexus 5 charger pumps out 1.2 amps.

Would it be unwise to use these [2 amp] chargers on my Nexus 5? Or would it just speed up my charging times without issue.

Thanks for the assistance

from everything i've read i don't think it will be a problem. the device has charging circuitry to protect the device. (within reason).

Okay that's good to know. According to Du Battery my charge times on these 2a chargers are a little over an hour and a half. I've been enjoying the rapid charge but I didn't wanna cause issues to the battery or phone. Especially since battery is unremovable.

I think there's a misunderstanding here. It's not that the charger is 'pumping out' a certain current eg 2.0A - not at all.

It would be far better to say that it is capable of supplying up to eg 2.0A. It only puts out whatever current is being drawn by the device. So, putting a device designed to draw say 1.2A onto a charger designed to supply up to 2.0A would never be problem.

To reiterate, current is drawn from the charger by the device, not pushed out of the charger into the device.

I do love the fact this phone charges very quickly with the charger it comes with. Equally fast as an iphone, for reference.

Glad this thread exists, cause I have old HTC chargers and my 2 SGS3 chargers laying around that I can utilize to charge the N5.

The phone/tablet limits the amount of amperage needed, like Jon said above.
So the charger's ability of amperage could be bigger than the phone's/tablet's needing, but should not less.
The HTC chargers have 1A output, the SGS3 charger might have even less.

Okay cool. Thanks everyone, now I can use the various "charging" areas of my house without having to limit myself to one spot for the Nexus.

@adamsberg It would be interesting to figure out if the branded HTC and the like chargers were safe to run at their maximum rating.

Theoretically they should. :-\

Yep, their chargers should have a worst-case dimensioning for power input/output and ambient temperature :)
