2GB or 3GB? Does it even matter?

Some will, no doubt, but the majority will want to reach as many potential users as possible unless they like floods of one star reviews. That means aiming for mid-range specs.

Also... you might be stuck with a two-year contract, but ever since picking up a Nexus 4 I've vowed to never buy a phone on contract again. :)

Jumping carriers to escape a Nexus 4, really a great plan. Several of my customers did that. Thank goodness for contract buyouts.

The more ram the better, when you consider that a chunk of it will be eaten by system software. And if you're a big multitasker, having less ram will allow you to have a worse experience in that department

Up to four apps on screen with Dual App and QSlide apps, plus SlideAside if thats still in there. More RAM is best RAM on a phone like that. Plus the ability to use better textures if there is in fact an 805/420 model....good textures can make up for a lot of things in gaming.

The system software comes off the GB, not the RAM.

Mav.

Open your RAM status. Tell me how much is currently reserved by the system. Note also that part of the memory is not visible because it is reserved by the graphics. This is why 1GB phones started failing so hard, with a few exceptions like the Moto X which was customised. Even the Tab 3 7.0 LTE with 1.5 GB does much better than the 7.0 wifi with 1GB in simple things like reopening an app or switching between two apps, and only the LTE has enough RAM to support Dual Window. Same as the 8.0 with the extra mem does DW but the 10.1 with (inexplicably) 1GB again does not....

Soundtrack to Chaos has the right of this. Same as anything less than 16GB storage is a raw deal, anything less than 2GB RAM is soon going to be a problem.

Escaped *to* a Nexus 4. I ditched contracts (even paid an ETF) just so I could buy a Nexus 4 outright and switch carriers. Best phone decision I've ever made.

Wow! Way to buck the current! Man, what were you running away from at the time? I really want to know....

Is 2GB of ram enough for the phone to run well or do you think I need 3 since it has such a high resolution screen?

I think down the road 3gb will help keep it more future proof and eliminate that dreaded "not enough ram so won't be getting the latest update" then again with google moving to make android work better on lower end devices, i could see 2gb being plenty for awhile to come.

Moto x has 2 gb ram. Think you mean the moto g

My mistake, thanks.

Ever been a Sprint customer?

Still am :3 they haven't screwed up in our area. None of the other carriers deal well with sustained connections of four or more hours thru a single tower with a single IP address, and overall things are still great including total bill less than $60 unlimited.

That's cool. :) For me Sprint became unbearable in mid 2012, and I wasn't able to secure any kind of a discount on my plan. When I finally left in early December of that year (after almost 14 years of being a customer), my monthly savings from switching covered the cost of the prorated ETF in a matter of months, and easily paid for the phone itself by the time my contract would have ended. I hold no animosity toward Sprint, they were relatively good to me over the years (even during the dark days of the mid-2000s) but I'm happier where I am now.

Likewise. I wish mine was a good area but went a year with 0.2 Mbps speeds.. Couldn't deal anymore.

come on now - how long are you planning on keeping this phone?
future-proofing is a myth. the kind of people who HAVE to have the highest specs have to have the highest specs - not so much due to a specific need for X amount of Y variable.

In other words, if there was a 4g option, some people would clammer for that.

most phones have 1g ram - nobody with a 2g phone is getting the "not enough ram" message any time in the reasonable lifetime of their phone. at least not the lifetime typical to the kind of person who "specs out" their devices.

I wouldn't be so sure. My 1,5 year's galaxy s3 didn't get the kit Kat update "because it has not enough memory"

Ok whatever you say.... Apps and skins are getting larger and this is a problem for some who do not get updates. Not to mention the more ram, especially with the upcoming 64bit chips the better.

Because you can totally swap a 64bit chip and OS into your 1GB phone....

Clearly, comprehension isn't your strong point. I never said you could add that, I was talking about with the upcoming chips that are going to be released to the original comment I replied to saying that more ram does not matter.....

If someone ships a 1GB major label phone with a 64bit OS and it's not AAPL, I will eat my hat. My *favorite* hat. I just cannot envision this as being of potential concern...?

2 GB vs 3 GB? Probably doesn't matter much. Except when the 3 GB model means you get 32 GB of storage and the 2 GB model only gives you a pitiful 16 GB. ;)

I doubt 3 GB hurts, exactly, but if you're running 3 GB of stuff at the same time on your phone you really should tone it down a bit.

I know this is an old thread but anything under 2gb ram is useless.
Apps wont install, yoou get low space messages and some apps wont let you install them on sd card
