3G SPEED DROPPED

@japclev
PRL cannot and does not control or limit data speeds. Period. End of story. Were you roaming during any of your tests? If not, then the PRL changes had nothing to do with your results. (maybe the different ROMS did, who knows)

Okay, whatever you say, it worked and I am pretty sure I handled my problem solving pretty effectively.

I'm very glad you got your problem solved, and my intent is not to rain on anyone's parade. My goal is simply to let others know that the PRL has nothing to do with data speeds (nor most other things it gets blamed/credited for) so that they don't embark down a fruitless time-consuming journey. There's a lot of complex variables out there that can be looked at when troubleshooting problems with a smartphone, but the PRL isn't one worth worrying about.

I'm glad I worried about it. For example, going down the PRI route was fruitless for me. Maybe it worked for someone else.

But since I shouldn't try anything, I think you are right and I'll set it back to 60669 and live with the 128kb.

Thanks,

i haven't read through this whole thread, so I don't know if anyone has already said what I'm about to say but -

When I had the unofficial 2.2 update, my internet on 3G was BLAZING!! Had installed it on both my wife's phone and mine - and some of the page rendering was as fast as our desktop.

When the official update was pushed to the phone, speed dropped dramatically.

Relax, no one's blaming you for experimenting. But again, if you weren't roaming then the PRL doesn't come into play. If you WERE roaming, then there's a chance that the different PRL's could have been forcing your Evo to connect to a roaming network that only had 1x data instead of EVDO. (2G instead of 3G) The PRL is nothing more than a text file which states things like, "...when in southeastern Iowa, prefer Midwest Wireless to Verizon...". (a bit oversimplified, but the point is the same)

Like I said, i am going back to 60669 on your advice. Also, anyone else that reads this thread, please DO NOT CHANGE YOUR PRL!

"Help, my phone won't work?"
"Is there sand in it?"
"No...besides sand has nothing to do with a phone..it's just a small granular item used to make beaches."
"Were you at the beach?"
"Yes...but I still don't understand! Beaches don't have anything to do with my phone not working!!"

So let me get this straight, you made wholesale changes to your device by flashing ROM's (new code, new drivers, new radio firmware), and yet you are convinced that the lowly PRL file is what made the difference? Even though it has nothing to do with anything other than roaming? Really?? Should we argue about whether the earth is round while we're at it?

You're funny! I already told you I took steps to ensure that everything I modified was not the culprit. I even drove south with PRL 60669 and got great speeds, however, when I returned back to work I struggled again. Now when I drive south and back to work with 60666 I am fine. I really don't think I am roaming or at least my phone is not telling me I am. You think I just made wholesale changes--changed my PRL once and said OMG my speed dropped so automatically that's it. So basically, I really don't care about your personal feelings on PRL modifications. You pushing to be right has amused me most of this work day, and I thank you for that. I also bet the mods don't want personal attacks attached to this thread even though your'e headed there. I started the thread because I noticed a problem. My last post before you got involved, was the fact that I solved my problem by rolling back my PRL. Take it for what it's worth. In the future though, I will take your word as gospel. Please tell me to jump off a bridge.

my prl updated on its own, it just said it was updated one day..

as for speeds, sprint here was never all that good, with tmo i can get 4mb down with a nexus one, but there service sucks..

with sprint sitting at home i get 1055kb and 150kb up..

i think the best ive had is about 2mb down in a busy area near downtown..

sometimes its only 200 down so it can be really bad at times depending on where i am...

i didnt think it ever had anything to do with the phone itself...

Thought I would share this. (I do have a rooted Unrevoked EVO for the record).

After dealing with such slow 3g speeds on tether using 2.2 reaching speeds up to 128k or worse, today I decided to do a restore that I had made from ROMmanager before 2.2 update. After the restore was complete, I bounced back to 2.1 and the results were amazing on how fast the Tether speed instantly jumped back up, for me this is a huge indicator that 2.2 had made a small mess of things. I say this only because I love the free tether program.

So, if you're not a big 2.2 fan and want you fast tether back, restore the backup that you made prior to upgrading your rooted EVO to 2.2 and you should be good to go.

I wanted to give an update tony first post also. I went back to the area I recently moved from and did a speedtest and was surprised to see 2.2mbps download and 1mg upload. I did several test and all were consistently the same good results. On the way back to where I now live I did speed tests on a few other towers getting slower test results. I had this issue on my stock 2.1 EVO and I can also confirm that prl has nothing to do with slow 3g speeds. What I have learned from this is that the tower you are currently connected to will determine your data speeds. Some areas have excellent 3g speeds while others have poor 3g speeds. It's not our phones. If Sprint was secretly limiting data bandwidth by means of prl or some other updates, then I would get the same slow 3g speeds on all sprint towers I connect to. This is not the case. I am able to get super fast 3g on certain towers in certain areas where I just moved from across town.

My advice is to be patient while Sprint continues to roll out 4g nationwide. As for the 3g It's hit and miss when it comes to great speeds. Maintenance and upgrades are most likely the reason for dropped 3g performance. Don't waste too much time flashing this or flashing back to that, etc. That is NOT the source of the problem... its the tower you are connected to. Period. And thanks misc for your input on this thread. It was constructive and helpful.
