4.04- Great update- Not!

I experienced the same exact result when flashing the first set of leaked 4.0.4 radios.

While the leaked radios worked differently for me, it wasn't much of an improvement. So fart these are much better for me at least. I'm impressed.

Weird. They're the same exact radios as the last leak.

Signal was fine before the update and fine after. Maybe just slightly better looking at dBm but difference is so small can't definitively say it's due to the update vs random fluctuations. It certainly hasn't gotten worse though. Like someone mentioned, maybe it's the network in the area?

No more 4G here as well. I used to get 4G with my thunderbolt and Xoom and mifi jet pack. Battery drains quickly now due to signal hunting.

The title of this thread is fairly immature and childish sounding. I think that that helped to contribute to the early people in the thread commenting how annoying your posts were getting.

I second ^ suggestion: pull the SIM card, and if that doesn't work go talk to VZW about getting a new one. I don't think that this is normal, given that I was getting very good 4G LTE signal, and very good down and up speeds in the heart of Austin yesterday.

I didn't see it posted, but here is something else to consider: swapping basebands

**disclaimer** I'm NOT running a CDMA Gnex, I'm running the GSM version

all factory images I've tried have all come with a European baseband. Yes, it worked, but it was slow to grab signal, and would drop 4G often.

Once I unlocked the bootloader one of the first things I tried was swapping basebands to a North American one. For me this made more of a difference then going from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4.

Yes, I realize that CDMA and GSM are different beasts. And yes, Verizon should take some heat for not pushing the update sooner. They should also look into why its hurting SOME people's phones while improving others. Could be apps installed, could be location, could be a bad install, or a host of other problems.

But having said that, its worth a shot, isn't it?

I don't understand why people find it so hard to believe that it's a software issue (i.e. the 4.0.4 update) that is causing the degredation in performance for some of us??

Just as a lot of people's phones got better after a SOFTWARE update, why is it so inconceivable to think that a phone can get worse after a SOFTWARE update?

Smartphone (and computer) history is riddled with examples of updates/"upgrades" that break things or generally make the experience worse.

Why would Verizon/Google release an update if it broke stuff? It's called incompetence. Take a look at Google Maps for example (still no spoken street names in the latest version) or the My Verizon Mobile app. Obviously not intended but it sure as hell happens.

It's like me saying all those people who had 4G reception/handoff/battery life issues on 4.0.2 are crazy to think that their phones got better after 4.0.4 because it just had to have been a hardware problem all along.

Just because different people are having different experiences with the update does not mean it is a hardware problem, it only means that there is probably subtle variations/revisions in the hardware that we call the Verizon GNex that respond to the software differently and does not imply a hardware "fault". You have to be naive to think that all Verizon GNexs are identical hardware-wise.

For the tl;dr's:

The 4.0.4 SOFTWARE update has caused problems for some, it has fixed problems for others. These problems created/fixed are NOT hardware problems.

Although I got better single strength. It seems like a step backwards. Also I got better quadrant scores and Speed Test Scores with 4.0.2. Both have gotten slower after the 4.0.4 update.

My signal still sucks and the battery life is pretty much exactly the same

I agree with the OP. The only fix for me is the faster handoff between 4g and 3G, but no improvement in signal strength, no volume improvement, no increase in battery life and no improvement in call quality. WiFi radio has not improved. My Razr Maxx consistently doubles the speed of the GNex using the Speedtest app on both WiFi and 4G and I live in an excellent 4G area.

While I don't have worse 4G coverage, it definately is no better than with the older version. I'm begining to think it is more of a hardware issue at this point. It seems there are 2 crowds .. 1 gets the update and sees a lot better signal ... 2 gets the update and is the same or worse ..

My wife has a Gnex as well and if we sit our phones side by side, typically she will be 1 bar better and 6 - 10 dBM better as well. The only other difference may be power consumption .. I have a lot more installed and perhaps running than she does ..

As far as battery life, volume and some other things mentioned .. it is the same for me now as it was pre 4.04 ..

So far my signal has improved according to the signal meter. However, actual signal is around the same. Right now I am at -93 dbm 47asu. Which is around what I used to get on 4.02.

I think in regards to signal strength, it only fixed the handoffs. I definitely see faster handoffs and the signal strength is a little better(which may be just faster switching that im seeing). One thing that i think is that no software update is going to 'fix' the signal issue people are having. When i go into philly, I always have 3-4 bars of 4G and it never drops but if I go to areas with less towers of 4G, that's when it seems to start having problems. Also, this phone when indoors is terrible. I just think it is just the way the phone was built in regards to antenna placement and such and updates really can't fix that. I used to have a charge and took it back because of the same issue because my T-bolt was better at keeping signal. The fascinate and continum also had lower signal strength than phones like the incredible or droid x when it came to 3G. I don't know if I would call it an issue but it may be just how it was built.

Someone can also chime in and let me know how other sammy phones worked on different carriers to see if it really is samsung wide as I have only tested the verizon phones.

Just my opinion. What do you think?

another change ive noticed is that if you have your screen set for automatic brightness, the brightness "fades" from bright to dark instead of just automatically popping from bright to dark, which is kind of cool, not too bad

Is anyone other than me still having call quality issues where the mic seems to mute on the phone. I need to end the call then recall to fix this. It seems to occur after ~6-10 minutes on the phone. Verizon had told me in the past that this is a known issue that would be addressed with the 4.0.4 update, but it continues for me. If others who had this issue found that the update resolved the issue, I'm going to ask for a replacement as it must be hardware related. If this update did not fix this issue I'm going to have to jump ship to a different phone, which I really don't want to do. I love my gnex other than this call issue.

We all got the same software update.... I have been told that while this is not always the case, you often need to factory reset and/or pull your sim card after an update.

I'm assuming the people having issues already did this?

I'm no expert but you would think Verizon's testers would release radios that wouldn't hurt signal..\

And yeah the thread title is a bit childish but it's frustrating to have a phone have issues.

I fear this is a hardware issue.
I second that, I had a 11.11 GN with horrid signals and call muting, I received a replacement device today 11.12, and it is working great so far, I had a 2 hour conference call this afternoon, and used that to test it out. No muting, no problems, I must have tried 5-6 different radio combinations, and ROMS to no avail. new phone fixed it for me. *crosses fingers*
