This is for those who didn't want to go through the process of updating. (Rooted users)

Or those who think that the version they're currently on is fine so there is no need to update.

This post is also to take some of the negativity away from this board.

I was recently debating whether or not it would be worth going through the trouble of backing up all my data, resetting my phone, flashing newest factory image 4.2.2 and then re-rooting and restoring my phone, tablet, gf's phone and tablet. I thought, it's just a 0.0.1 update, is it really worth the trouble of spending hours updating several devices? KLP is right around the corner, I should just wait till then to get it all out of the way.

Well I had a day off and went through with it anyway. I did run into a few problems and the whole process did take me a lot longer to do than I care to admit. But I gotta say, boy was the update worth it.

Battery life galore, this update restored the battery life on my Nexus 7 to what it was like before 4.2, but seems to have also improved it! They really did a number on fixing the wakelock/sleeping problems. The battery life really is like night and day. Not only that, but for the first time in months I was able to use bluetooth on my Nexus 7 without issues. This battery life improvement was also very prevalent in my Nexus 4. I thought I had good battery life on my Nexus 4 before 4.2.2, but after updating, it really is great.

If you are on the fence on whether or not you should update. Do it. You won't be disappointed... Unless you're one of the few who have LTE.

Many custom ROMs including Cyanogenmod updated their software to 4.2.2 while keeping the ability to flash an older radio for LTE (I'm going between version 33 and version 27 seeing which one works better).

So the update is what caused my brilliant battery life? I only got my Nexus 4 last week; Thursday, I think... So it prompted an update and almost straight away once I had it set up. The battery life is so much better than any phone I've had before!

I have been experiencing decent battery life too. I also flashed franco kernel. Need to flash the old radio back for LTE since I had good coverage and speed with it on my canadian carrier (Bell)

I only had my phone a few days before the 4.2.2 update came out, and I pretty much just went ahead and did the update without thinking about it too much. Yeah, I get some fairly alright battery runtime under 4.2.2, and I'm ecstatic about it. It's very much better than on my EVO 4G, and way better than on friends' iPhone 4Ss.

I've no complaints about this phone at all, and hopefully I should have a proper screen protector kit and a nice case with clear, hard back, in the next day or two. I actually ordered a pile of stuff on Saturday from Amazon. ;)

I've been using a cheap little case, I'm currently doing some research on amazon to find the best bang for my buck on a great protective case for my N4.

I think I've narrowed it down to 2 or 3.

Amazon.com: JKase DIABLO Series Tough Rugged Dual Layer Protection Case Cover with Build in Stand for LG Google Nexus 4 E960 - Retail Packaging - White: Cell Phones & Accessories

Amazon.com: Acase Superleggera Pro Hybrid dual layer Case for LG Google Nexus 4 (Nexus 4, Black): Cell Phones & Accessories

And maybe this one too, just because its so cheap. But it has no reviews.
Amazon.com: Google Nexus 4/ Optimus G Nexus Black Armor/ Blue Skin With Black Combo Holster With Stand: Cell Phones & Accessories

Well, here's the case I'm planning on getting:

Amazon.com: Black - Google Nexus 4 Ringke Fusion The Best Selling Premium Hybrid Hard Case [Eco Package]: Cell Phones & Accessories

And here's the screen protector kit I'm getting:

Amazon.com: LG GOOGLE NEXUS 4 XtremeGUARD? FULL BODY Screen Protector Front+Back (Ultra CLEAR): Cell Phones & Accessories

I'm only planning on putting on the screen protector, not the rear panel one. This case more than adequately should protect the rear panel on the phone, and also I keep reading about how you get these weird visual effects by putting a clear cover over top of a clear film sheet.

Battery life improvements definitely worth losing the LTE I rarely used anyways (and no, not interested in rooting to get it back).

Got the Ringke Fusion Saturday and love it. Great feeling and looking case. My OCD gets to me a bit with the dirt/dust particles getting inside it from being in my pocket but other than that I really do like it alot.

I really wish google would push how much better the battery life is on 4.2.2. It is by far the biggest improvement and they don't even mention it in the changelog.

and really, LTE matters not to me when I'm getting 10mbit down on my HSPA+42 connection

Same here, and it's not just because I came off of Sprint's pokey 3G network, where I rarely got above 130 kbps. It's also because HSPA+ is plenty fast for email and all of the apps I use.

Maybe its just me, or the way I flashed the update, or my device, use, or area, but im not getting "great" "amazing" battery life you all are getting, and I've never gotten great battery life. I too was rooted, running Cm10.1. Followed the instructions to get back to stock so everything was wiped clean, even locked, unlocked my bootloader to really wipe everything.

The maximum, consistent battery life I get out of this phone is no more than 3.5hours if im lucky. 2.5 I hit the most, 3hrs I've been hitting recently, hit 3.5 once, but no more. Overall time is usually about 12-14 hours. Don't get me wrong, thats pretty good I suppose because it last a typical day for me, but lord do I wish I could push 16+ overall with 4-5 hours on time. Some of you get that with the update but not me. Really dont feel like wiping everything again and starting over again to make sure everything goes perfect. I rooted again but left the ROM stock and tried Franco, still got about the same life out of it.

I was shocked at the difference in battery life the 4.2.2 update made. I unplugged my phone at 7AM last Friday and didn't have to plug it back in until mid-day Monday. I used it pretty lightly over the weekend but I've never had a phone last like that. Nice job Google!

Agreed. My old iPhone struggled to get through a day on regular use. The N4, even with the usual 'new toy' playing, easily lasts a couple of days. When I'm down to my normal use, I reckon I may even squeeze another day, and be right out of the nightly charging routine.

I was being lazy about the update but will surely do it this weekend. I use the phone a lot for testing my apps so any help on battery life will be great. Thanks..:)

I don't own a Nexus 4, so I can't make any claims based on my own experience with this device, but I do own a Nexus 10 and have owned other Nexus devices in the past...

I think what a lot of folks don't realize is that installing an update on a rooted device doesn't have to be *that* complicated.

Yes, you could backup your device, un-root back to stock, install the update, then re-root your device and restore -- but doing this does sometimes have risks, the top risk being not being able to gain root after the update is applied (although this generally applies more to non-Nexus devices).

What I usually do is check XDA or Rootzwiki for a rooted version of the stock image that I can flash as ROM. It's much easier because you don't have to un-root first, you can flash right from custom recovery, and once it's done, it's already rooted and ready to go. Yes, I still advise doing a backup and wiping data before flashing, but it's still a much easier process to just backup, wipe, flash, restore...and honestly, if you're coming from the previous stock OS, you can probably even get away with dirty flashing. Obviously, you could also just install a custom ROM, like CyanogenMod, but I know that many folks, myself included, sometimes want to run the latest STOCK OS, especially on a Nexus device. Generally these stock ROMs are just that, no modifications other than root has been added.

If you're not rooted, you should be able to install the update via standard channels....

One other update feature - I noticed battery discharging when the phone was shut down! I think that related to wireless charging hardware since you can in fact do it with the phone shut down. Now with the update, I shut down with 100% and I restart the next day with 100% = nice!
