45 Watt charging is just a number

The only phone I've ever had that I noticed a huge difference using a higher wattage charger above 20 watts or so is with my OnePlus 9 Pro. That phone charges fully from dead in less than an hour.

Like many of you I am Ultra excited to get my new device. Since I ordered a custom color I know my wait will be long so to pass the time I've been watching as many videos on the S22 series, mostly the Ultra, as there are being released. I don't care for the camera videos too much because most of the images look the same to me on screen. With the announcement of 45 Watt charging though I've found a new category of video, the charging comparison, which has lead to some new discoveries. Like did you know that OnePlus has an 80 Watt charger? Yeah neither did I.

Which brings me to the title of this thread. I thought if 25 Watts was fast 45 Watts would be ridiculously fast. I mean it's almost double, right. Well imagine my disappointment when 45 Watt charging is only 12 minutes faster than 25 Watt charging. Yeah you read that right. I've watched about 3 videos now and in the first one I watched the difference was like 3 or 4 minutes. I couldn't believe it so I went looking for another. I found the one attached in this thread. The difference being that the vlogger specifically mentions that not only do they have a 45 Watt charger but they also have the thicker cable recommended to be used with it. This all sounded promising and I thought that is the key, but 45 Watts ended up only being 12 minutes faster than 25 Watt charging.

In both videos the S22 Ultra failed to reach 50% by 20 minutes, which is what they claim, but only by a few percentage points each time. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 44%. Even so 44% after 20 minutes still works out to a full charge at around 50 minutes. The charging cycle really must slow down as it approaches a full charge, which most of us know and expect, but a mere difference of 12 minutes is very unexpected. The vlogger even states that they performed the test multiple times with similar results.

So what do you think?

12 minutes is still around a 25% improvement in charge times, so I'd say it's worth it.

Can't recall last time I plugged my phone into a wired charger. I charge all my phones with wireless chargers but still got the 45W charger since had to use my pre order credits for something

Will probably use it for charging the Tab S8 Ultra since the $1200 tablet also doesn't come with a power adapter

Also, personally charging faster isn't a metric that excites me much. It's great it has the ability but not something I lose sleep over with slower charging.

Thank you. I learned something today because I needed to fact check this. I learned how to calculate a percentage of increase or decrease.

Turns out this difference is 13.9%.

1) Work out the difference between the two numbers being compared
2) Divide the increase by the original number
3) Multiply the answer by 100

In summary: percentage increase = increase ÷ original number × 100

Now I'll be able to calculate if I'm really getting 33% more shampoo in those bigger bottles. LOL

Yeah I was just guessing the percentage. I'd say 13.9% is material.

I am supposed to be receiving my 45 watt charger tomorrow going to tedt it out 0 - 100%

the 25 watt charger I had with my note 20 ultra does it in about an hour I don't think it will be much better than that

been using the 45-watt charger on my s22 ultra yesterday and today.

i'd say that the speed is indeed noticeable however, as others have said before, from roughly around 65% battery to 100%, it throttles to a slower charging pace. it's very obvious and clear that from, say, around 45% to 65%, it's very fast and then it slows down substantially.

still, net/net, i would go for this 45-watt charger. it's very helpful when you need to add a bit of juice and you have limited time.

i didn't try anything below 45% because between yesterday and today, i think the lowest i've gone down to is around 40% to 45%.

I wonder if the 25w vs 45w charger makes a bigger difference for the larger tablets like the Tab S8 Ultra? I have $50 free credit on Samsung.com to use and was wondering if it would at least be worth it for the larger tablets?

It would be more dependent on the battery size, not device type. The larger the battery, the more benefit you'll get with the 45W charger (so long as the device is compatible)

I'm a little confused about this thread. I'm here in Australia and have been researching what chargers and USB-C cables to buy for my pre-ordered S22 Ultra.

During my research, I discovered that all the current Samsung 45W chargers being sold, whether directly by Samsung or retail/online stores are selling the old 45W charger. Specifically, PD 2.0. Not the PD 3.0 that the S22 Ultra is rated for.

You can buy 25W chargers that are PD 3.0, (EP-TA800NBEGAU model number-black), but you cannot currently buy any PD 3.0 45W chargers. Obviously, that will retail in the near future.

So my question is this. With all these online reviews of the 45W charger vs 25W charger, are you sure it's the latest 45W charger and not the older PD 2.0 model? Because obviously that will make a big difference. As I say, here in Australia currently, I cannot see where you can buy the PD 3.0 45W charger. Samsung Australia website does not currently sell the latest 45W charger and neither does Samsung. com.

I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make. I mean at lower percentages the current chargers provide a fairly quick charge. It isn't until the charge reaches percentages over 50% the charge starts and this seems to be by design. One would assume they've done this to protect the battery but it is a little disappointing that that at the end of the day it only saves 8 to 12 minutes. So you might be on top something with the 2.0 3.0 thing. Maybe when those chargers are released it'll be more like 15 or 20 minutes.

I'm really annoyed with all the online and YouTube comparison videos that no one is clearly stating in advance what PD version charger they are using. If you do a YouTube video comparing a 25W and 45W fast charger, I think it's a bit irresponsible not to clearly state that the 45W charger is the previous PD version, and that the new version is not for sale yet.

It just seems the decent thing to do.

There's no mention of what PD version this is. The fact that it's compatible with earlier 45W charging phones suggests again that it's the old 45W fast charger.

It doesn't necessarily suggest that, it's backwards compatible after all.

Regardless, I wouldn't pin your hopes on PD3 making a huge difference.

Slight difference for the better for me using it. I usually keep my battery percentage between 45% to 85%. Every minute matters for me as I'm definitely a power user so it was worth it for me to purchase the 45 watt charger.

I'm sorry to harp on about this, but the photo 3 posts above doesn't verify anything as I cannot find the model number.

After some research, I found out the 2 model numbers of the old and new 45W Samsung fast chargers.

Old 45W charger
EP-TA845XBEGUS
Manufacture date 2021

New 45W charger
EP-T4510XBEGUS
Manufacture date 2022

I would be very interested to know if anyone can find the new 45W charger being sold anywhere. I looked at all our retailers in Australia and sure enough, everyone sells the old charger. Samsung Australia lists the old 45W charger also. So the new model isn't available for retail sale yet.

But I'm happy to be shown otherwise.

This is mine from my S22 Ultra order's freebie $200 accessories bonus. Wonder why you can't find it?

Maybe it's not yet available in Australia? Or maybe it's currently sold out?
