4G radio is dead

I have been out of town in a non-4G area since applying the DI07 update. Got home earlier today and just went to turn on 4G and it no longer is working!!

When I enable 4G (through the pull-down or the settings menu) now it just says "On..." and then "Unknown..."

Anyone else that has applied the update and lives in a 4G area seeing similar behavior?? I am currently backing up me SMS messages so I can do a hard-reset to see if that will fix it.

Thanks for the reply. It's looking like a hardware issue actually, which surprises me.. I did a factory reflash using Odin and the stock files and still no 4G. Have not re-installed the DI07 update so it looks like that probably didn't have anything to do with it.

I guess it could be a network issue but usually when I'm in a non-4G area it still has the 4G icon and "4G network disconnected" message. I'm not even getting the icon now.

To the OP.. Yeah same thing is happening to me. I have done a Hard reset and tried the Odin reflashing to stock and nothing has worked. My 4g was working fine even after the OTA update recently but as of yesterday the 4g radio does not turn on. Looks like I may have to exchange the phone, 30 days is approaching fast...

I have the update and am currently on 4G. To note: I manually installed the update.

I was on the phone with Advanced Technical Support last night for about 45 min troubleshooting. Tried a bunch of reprovisioning and even a master reset (not a hard/factory reset) of the phone and my account.

The conversation ended with the support rep making an appt at my local Sprint store for Monday to exchange my device.

Just got back from the sprint store. Good thing I was within my 30 day window (9/29/10 is my last day) as they replaced my phone no questions asked with a new one.

I tell you though, some of these Sprint "reps" are dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to the product they are supposed to be experts about. The first rep I spoke to and tried to explain the problem to just couldn't get it. He kept saying "4G is not in NY thats why its not working". I told him thats not the point the 4g RADIO doesn't even turn on. He kept saying the same thing over and over. Thank god for forums like these!

Apollo83, is your replacement phone working on 4G now? Have you downloaded the latest update? Both my EPICs worked fine until I was in the 4G network yesterday and got the same errors on both, and both have the update. Leads me to believe its the update.

Same problem here. I don't live in 4G area but have gone to KC a couple times. Worked the first time I was there, but the two times since the update it's doing the same thing as the OP. Bought mine through Radio Shack. Should I take it there or call Sprint first?

Thing is, I probably would have never known having no 4G here if it wasn't for my trips. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch more phones with the same issue but people don't know it since they don't have 4G in their area.

Just swapped out my Epic for a new one at the Sprint store - 4G is working fine on this new one. It keeps asking me to install the DI07 update - no way I'm doing that until this issue is resolved!!

I have read several threads on here, XDA, and SDX about this issue. I figure the DI07 update either introduced a software/firmware bug, or does something to ultimately cause a hardware failure of the 4G radio.. Seems a lot of people had this problem start over this past weekend..

Yeah so far everything is working perfectly. I updated to DI07 and I was able to connect to 4G. What I found strange with my last phone is that I had the update for over a week before it started to be a problem. I was able to connect to 4g on that phone for a time after the update. I started to notice a problem AFTER I installed and used Juice Defender.

I noticed Juice Defender would turn off my 3g radio while screen was off (which is fine) but when I turned the screen back on the 3g radio would never turn back on. Only way I could get my data connection back was to toggle Airplane mode on wait 15 sec then turn off. Even after I uninstalled JD everytime I turned the screen off I would lose my data connection. Finally I did a factory reset and it seemed to solve the problem, until the 4g problem came along.

I was thinking back and I think I might have had 4G after I did the update also. I remember watching a bunch of movie trailers in the Media Hub, though there's a chance that I did it over Wifi.

The only app I "installed" recently (and should have nothing to do with 4G) was the Google App Inventor.

That is strange. My phone went through an OTA auto update and I still have 4G service here in Anaheim CA, this past weekend in Austin TX as well.

Exchanged my phone and the new one works fine after the update. Thinking back, my 4g problem started before the update was even available. Now kind of glad I had to exchange because the capacitive buttons are much more responsive on my new one and the slider is a bit tighter than my old one.

Took mine to my local 3rd party sprint store and they messed with it awhile and couldn't resolve it, then one of the managers picked up a piece of paper and said this is a known issue with sprint and just wait for an update in a couple of days. I chatted with online Sprint and they had never heard of this issue. So I called the Sprint store in Lee's Summit (not a 3rd party store), and they had not heard of the issue either, but as they are in an actual 4G area, they told me to bring both our phones in (both had the problem and had worked previousl). They did the factory reset, but they gave us both new phones as that wouldn't fix it. They told me not to worry about the system updates, to go aheady and run them and if still had problems with 4G bring them back in. I updated them, reinstalled my apps and contacts and rebooted, and 4G still works! Tomorrow is the end of my 30 days too, so that's why I didn't want to wait it out. If you have this problem, your fix is to replace the phone. Must have been a bad batch of phones.

my wife has this issue on her phone any fix yet? my epic works fine on 4g right next to hers
