4G Hotspot does not stay connected to 4G disconnects all the time

I've tried toggling all of my settings off and on on and did multiple hard resets on my phone and I am still having issues with wireless tethering. Has anybody been able to fix this by swapping out their phone? This is really aggravating since it worked fine on my Incredible! I'd be happy to be able to 3G tether reliably at this point...

People will think I'm nuts but I used my EVO's 4G hotspot to connection my PS3 and play Call of Duty online. No glitching or lag what so ever. I'm a sniper in the game so connection is crucial and it did the job. My TBolt on the other hand just can not handle the load of multiplayer online gaming. It's fine for my laptop and ps3 browsing but doesn't have the consistency needed for COD.

I've had the same problem whether tethering my PC, I pad 2, or Xoom. Streaming video can usually cause the data signal to drop within seconds.

Same issue with me from day one. I am on my second TB and the same. I have a dell xp, macbook pro. I play pokerstars poker and have never made it more than 5 minutes without being disconnected. This is not a specific area issue with me because it happens all over the twin cities which has a very strong 4g coverage.

I had rock solid hotspot connections for the first 7 days in Los Angeles, then had a whole day of dropouts and disconnections/reconnections. Last week it was rock solid again for connections, including streaming, and im using it 8 hours a day during weekdays! I think Verizon fixed something in the network over the weekend, since the only change I made to my settings was to turn off data roaming.

I've had the same problem since day one exanged it on day two still have same problem but the battery on the new is easily ten times more efficient so I'm afraid to exchange again and get another faulty battery VZW really needs to get on the ball we spent way to money for something I want to throw against the wall!

Guys have the same problem with my first phone a now my second phone is doing it with my orginal iPad. What is doing what I like to call tripping, basically connection starts off good, then just a matter of minutes it starts going on and off. Tried resetting the phone and change the levels of security and keeps on doing over and over. I wound up changing to wep security and reset network connections on the IPad and tried the same 30 min. youtube video I use for testing. This last time it allowed for the whole download to go thru. On a side note I thought Apple had fixed the wifi issue and security level last year to allow for a higher level of security.

What is weird is my wifi Xoom does not inhibit this same behavior most of the time and I use the wpa2 security level for it. Right I don't if I want to throw the iPad or the Thunderbolt against the wall. If anyone has an ideas that I haven't tried please do tell. I am up for suggestions and I'm on my last nerve!

I'm having the exact same problem. My Thunderbolt keeps dropping/losing the 4G data connection when I tether devices to it using the built-in mobile hotspot app. I've been able to reproduce the issue tethering from a Windows 7 laptop and a MacBook Pro.

This makes the Thunderbolt completely useless to me as a mobile hotspot device. My home internet is out while some construction is being done at my place. Luckily my T-Mobile G2 works amazingly well as a mobile hotspot and it's completely reliable across multiple machines without a single dropped session. It's not as fast as the Thunderbolt but at least it works. Hopefully this issue will be fixed soon.

Hey hopefully more people will see this thread and post about this situation more. I know there more people having this problem than just the few here.

What l like to do is we all could post the type of settings we are using for security, data roaming, type of devices being used and other important information to kind of narrow the field of possibilities. And hopefully realize it is not our devices and make pull out our hair more!

acmxenon,

I too use a long youtube video as a test for dropouts. You experience the problem with an ipad but not a xoom? On either tablet, rapidly jumping around to random sections within the video almost always triggers a drop.

Where is everyone located? I'm in the orlando area, which is where engadget (thusfar the highest profile light on the issue) was when they experienced the same issue on a pair of thunderbolts.

For me the 4G mobile hotspot worked perfectly for the first 4 days. Now it only works for about 5-10 minutes until it starts to drop the connection. The USB tether has been flawless with no disconnects. I am connecting to a Dell laptop running XP.

No, i have been using the Internet Connection Mode setting in Connect to PC. I haven't notice any problems with this connection.

Sorry guys I haven't here the last little bit, been of trying to field test different areas of the 4G area to see if this is continous problem for me, and yes it still is. Not as bad when a stronger signal area, mobile hotspot still kicks out after 5 mins. versus at my house after say 1-2 mins. Aeryn here mention about using Youtube videos and that is what I use to test with.

The particular video I use for testing in Youtube is the Evo 3D by chuong its about 30 mins. long and shows how what the Thunderbolt should have been. I have my ideas why we didn't a get phone like this, but will save that for another time.

I will post up some of my results and findings tomorrow due need to a break and some have peaceful time to keep from messing with this matter any longer tonite!

Here is my update as promised, I have went to a fairly strong 4G part in another city to test all my devices out. Used a 8 minute Youtube 2x each to test out what is kicking my mobile hotspot out, turning data off and on. My Xoom stayed connected and downloaded the clip 2x. Tried my Asus XP notebook downloaded and played the same clip 2x, no problem. Used my iPad 3G with the hotspot, all 3x data on and off, tried with Security on and Security off. Wanted try one last thing used my daughter's Verizon iPhone and put in airplane mode and kicked the mobile hotspot on and off again as well.

I talked to a Verizon tech today and told him some other people was having this problem like me and we had discussion about me do some field testing tomorrow. So I will be going to Charlotte NC tomorrow where this is one of the big 4G markets in my area and running these tests and report to the tech what my outcome is.

So far from what I can tell from testing is that it may be something Apple wifi related and has to do with buffering in the streaming of the video. Please if anyone is using an iPad/2 or iPod touch and either has problems connecting/not staying connected or can stay connected during a video or heavy data usage will you post some information to help provide recommendable solution.

Given that I can cause the dropout to happen on a xoom and pc in addition to the ipad 2, I'm betting theres something larger at party than apple wifi woes. If clip starts correctly, it'll usually play until the end. As a result, imo, two complete playthroughs of a clip might be a smaller sample size than you realize. Take the same clip and start jumping around to different, random parts. In my experiments, this'll cause the data to drop sooner or later.

Aeryn problem being is if we can't get others to report on this matter and help out, makes harder to work on a solution. I am not here to complain about my Thunderbolt, I enjoy using my phone. Yes it has flaws and has it perks. Right now we are getting around month left of free mobile hotspot and I would like to use it stable on all my devices.

Yes I know there are always alternatives in the market, right now that is not my point. A service was given to use as my choice and I want to utilize the hotspot to its full capability, especially on my iPad.

If anyone else is not having problems using an iPad with their Thunderbolt I would like to know there setup, like what kind of security, so forth!

I used my iPad 2 with the hotspot with no problems the first week for 8 hours a day, although I didn't try any streaming or YouTube. Then, I had dropouts one friday all day. The next week I turned off data roaming, and I had no disconnects all week including some streaming and light YouTube.

I'm going try some long YouTubes tomorrow at work, and I'll let you know the results.
