4G LTE Live in the B'Ham!

WOOT! WOOT! Woke up this morning to a 4G LTE symbol on my Thunderbolt! Looks like Birmingham, AL went live a week early! No more driving an hour south to Montgomery to play in LTE land. :p

What was really shocking was that after swapping out for a fresh battery, it locked onto LTE extremely fast (under 30 seconds), whereas before it took a minute or two to lock onto 3G. Also monitored the signal on the 15 mile drive into work and it never dropped LTE while passing numerous cell towers. Even better is that it?s been solid at work for over four hours now, whereas before it would often drop 3G on/off all day, sometimes going down to 1x. Not sure if that was related to the cell repeater they have here at work or that it?s now LTE enabled, or that the LTE signal from the closest cell tower penetrates better inside the building. It has full bars consistently now, whereas before it would fluctuate.

One other thing to note is that battery drain hasn?t noticeably increased. Still have 85% after 5 hours. This isn?t unexpected as I?ve never seen much difference in battery drain whether in 3G or when visiting LTE areas (either on Froyo MR2 or on GB). The only real drain is when actually using the phone more because of the faster network speeds! LTE completes this phone for me! :p

Congrats have fun with 4G. It's amazing!

Well, so far so good. The phone and data connection have been awesome today, best ever! I'm really surprised by how much more stable the data connection appears to be now that LTE has been turned on:D
Congratulations!

Regardless of the various reported 3G/4G issues that all the new 4G phones seem to have, it is my contention that once 4G is prevalent, we will all be very happy with the new LTE/EVDO radio implementation. Just a matter of time. And, I've got to say, I think VZW is doing a fantastic job of meeting and exceeding 4G rollout deadlines.

Just curious, but what kind of results are you seeing when you run the SpeedTest app? I'm visiting a friend in Trussville today, and I'm getting faster upload speeds than download speeds, which seems a little odd. At the airport though, I got 39 down and 17 up. Either way, not too shabby.....

Just ran it again and got 10 down, 15 up. Is it like that south of town?

No joy here in Tuscaloosa yet, but we took a lot more tornado damage than Birmingham. But, on a slightly different note, I've noticed that there have been parts of 20/59 between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham that only have 1x. Has that always been the case, or is that due to tornado damage?

From what I've read, T-town and Birmingham were both supposed to get 4G earlier this year, but the tornado damage delayed things. And, given that the damage here was much more severe, I'm guessing the repairs were more extensive, delaying 4G even longer than in B'ham.

But, even with only 3G, I was really impressed with VZW's performance inside Bryant-Denny during the Vanderbilt game. I rarely go to games, but I managed to get a ticket to that one. I made and received a few calls during the game, and I sent some texts and got online. There was only one time, around halftime, where things stopped working for a short time. Other than that, service was fine, which is something that AT&T could never manage.

I was at the Bama-Tennessee game 2 years ago (the one where Cody blocked the field goal attempt to seal the game), and I thought the cell service was great. I had data the entire time while my buddies and their iphones on AT&T had none.

But I digress....

I'm still in town and was wondering if you guys have 4G today, or is it just out on this side of town (Trussville). I think it's probably because of the network issues but just wanted to check with others. Thanks guys.

Congrats -- they are getting close to my area (Columbus, GA / Phenix City, AL). I get to play in 4g land when we go to Atlanta and love it! Can't wait.
