4G Radio in Epic Versus EVO

The Epic I used had a 10mb download when the Evo could only pull 3mb in the same room (this was with a Clear repeater about 15 feet away). However, I believe 2.2 for the Evo fixed the signal lock / strength issues.

Uh... what more do you want to know?

The WiMax radios that Samsung used were what Sprint suggested and this (in a side by side empirical test) did better than the Evo which did not use a standard WiMax chip (standard for the US that is, I believe that chip can even be used in European WiMax markets).

I continue to be amazed at just how much better the 4G radio is on this than on the EVO, which I still have. I do notice, though, that the 3G radio on the Epic does not seem to pull in as strongly as the EVO.

I have a feeling that one or two updates from Samsung will fix this. The EVO has had a number of firmware updates, including the radio.

Speaking of the 4G radio on the Epic, mine is draining battery like a siff and when I look at what the phone is doing, it's showing 52-61% w/o a signal and when I look at my network app on the phone it's telling me the phone is trying to lock onto a WCdMA signal and whenever I try to force over to use CDMA PRL Auto, the phone locks up on me...

I have a gut feeling that this issue is my culprit as to why this thing is draining so fast, today I barely used the phone, took it off the charger at 8AM and did like MAYBE 15 text messages, 3 e-mails and one 5 minute call to my wife and nothing else at all and I went from full to 25% by 3PM with my phone just sitting on my desk looking pretty and by 5PM it was about to die. I have every possible thing disabled that could eat battery and the screen is on the lowest possible setting too.

I took it to the Sprint tech to look at it and they can't find a darn thing wrong with the phone... They're going to order me a replacement battery but I know that's not going to help. I heard rumors from here and elsewhere that Samsung pushed the phone out the door with the GSM firmware installed for the radio and never used the correct one for CDMA which is why the phone is trying to find a WCDMA signal over a CDMA one.

Anyone else heard anything similar or know of any updates coming in the near future? I guess I can try to swap out for another Epic but I fear I'll have the same issues.

I don't have 4G signal on my area, but your comment on the 3G resonates with my experience so far. Is too early though to make a judgement on this but my 3G connection seems to time out a little more often with the Epic than the Evo. Not something I would call a problem yet.
