5.2" 1080p

Re: 5.2" 1080p

To some extent... That was also down scaling from 4k to 1080, so it's a natural conversion that's easier for the GPU to handle. If Sony went from 4K to QHD (or QHD to FHD), it'd be a waste of effort.

It's all a matter of GPU cycles... The physical screen needs to push those pixels no matter what resolution, so power usage there is the same.
Interesting... So perhaps others could do a 4k display running at fHD most of the time

Well, it could be done. Only problem is that 4K displays that small are extremely expensive... And to do that would be like buying a LaFerrari and running on 4 cylinders most all the time.

But it's a smart solution. Sony is kind of thinking ahead since a 4K display is senseless on a phone.... Unless you plan on strapping it on a VR headset... THEN it pays off.

A QHD edge panel on the Note 7 is some $270.. I can't imagine what a 4K AMOLED version would run.

$270 is what Samsung charges for the screen right? Not what it costs Samsung to manufacture.

Right, but what difference does it make?

Though I did read that the margin in the screen isn't that high. The edge screens are fearfully expensive to manufacture. I think it was the burn rate... Screens they have to chuck.

The s6 edge screen cost $24 more than the s6 screen. The Note 5 screen cost $72.50, which is less than the cost of the Note 4 screen. Putting that together, I would venture that the note 7 screen is around $100 bom.

True, bit I don't put much attention into the unit cost like that... R&D recoup costs aren't really taken into account in that number.

I wouldn't disagree with you there, only that the $270 replacement cost isn't a realistic estimation of the cost of the screen... Just like the $75 battery replacement cost doesn't accurately depict the cost of manufacturing and r&d on the battery, which is pretty minimal.

Re: 5.2" 1080p

A 1080p display on this size is enough. the QHD and UHD displays are for VR. But the hardver is more bothered with that resolutions. So I think if somebody do not use the smartphone for VR, the QHD and UHD displays are not required too much.

I would agree... Fhd is perfectly fine on a 5.2" display so long as you don't use vr
