Re: Phone Collection

I used to have a whole bunch of phones, flip phones, texting phones, Blackberries, Motorola droids etc... eventually I donated them all to be refurbished and passed on to a battered women's shelter. Now when I switch phone I turn in the old one, it saves me some money.

Some Nice Collections and some that i haven't heard of before i must confess.

We would all love to have a job reviewing the latest smartphones. You must be sad of your departure to another department SLRdude. Licking stamps is not good lol kidding.

So i will be selling my Nexus 5 so my collection will end up looking like...

1)Note 3

2)Lg G2

3)Sony Xperia Z2

This will keep me content until the Note 4 perhaps :-P or just sell one to make way and keep to that system :-)

Unlocking the Note 3

Is there any free method to unlock a sim locked Note 3?

If this is against forum rules my apologies.

Your carrier is supposed to do it for free (In the US at least)

Lucky for you Americans its ?20 here in the UK atleast with EE anyway to whom im locked with.

I have tried region lock away as i have heard in some instances this works (just not with me). Guess i will just have to pay, will be worth it to have it permanently unlocked :-) just thought there may have been a free option.

Nexus 5 Battery

Cant wait to get my new phones, the Lg G2 and the Sony Xperia Z2 to accompany the Note 3 and I'm going to sell my Nexus 5 as good as it is the battery is shockingly poor 3h 11m compared to the 11hrs + on the note 3.

Re: Nexus 5 Battery

Are you talking about screen-on time? 3 hrs 11 min of screen-on time is on the lower end of average for the N5 (I'm usually on track for 3.5-4 hrs). That in itself is not totally shocking, given the average battery that the N5 has. As a comparison, on my Razr Maxx (the first phone that boasted a monster battery), I was still only able to get 5-6 hrs of total screen-on time on one charge (but with moderate use, I could go a full 2 days between charges). You're getting 11 hrs of screen-on time with the Note 3? That's pretty darn good, but the Note 3 does have a gargantuan battery, after all.

Totally get that and i by no means trying to compare the Nexus 5s 2600 mah i believe or is it 2300mah cant remember, to a 3200mah.

This 3hrs 11mins is average and not shockingly poor but I'm just used to my Note 3 which is sim locked (hence why I'm using my Nexus 5) I am not going to say its a bad phone all round and value for money its brilliant, I'm just a heavy user and mainly browsing and reading articles, fb, and taking pics ect and that drains that battery fast.

Yeh i was shocked at the 11h and x amount of mins on the Note 3 but i am rooted and have a custom rom wirh bloat removed.

All in all the Nexus 5 is not bad but i like to alternate and i have now tried and for the most part really enjoyed using it.

But the G2 and Z2 and my note 3 means i have some great devices to alternate with and someone who is an average user can then benefit from the Nexus 5.

Re: Nexus 5 Battery

Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. It's too bad LG didn't just make the N5 as a G2 GPE, instead of altering some of the hardware.

With the exception of Oppo with the find 7 qhd display, is the Z2 the phone of early 2014?

It trumps the S5 and the Htc One (M8) IMO.

I base this on design, Specs, and useful features.

For me as an avid movie watcher and i am passionate about music the Z2 is most certainly targeted at me and no doubt millions of others. It also has that Camera that going by reviews and pics i have seen its pretty darn good (not without niggles) but what camera on a phone doesn't have any?

I have mainly been loyal to Samsung having owned the ,S3,S4, Galaxy Mega and still have the Note 3.

But times Change and for me anyway the Sony Z2 has most certainly been the phone that has grabbed my attention. I am not fussed about heart rate monitors or fingerprint readers.

The Features/Hardware that get my attention are Camera, Decent specs, Battery, Storage and Build, and the features are good camera software, good musical playback and Audio, Nice Clean and Functional UI.

So I have had my mind swerved from Samsung although i will retain my Note 3 (its just to good for me to part with).

So based on reviews and my own opinion the Z2 is the clear overall feature focused phone of early 2014.

Well done Sony and i will look forward to having it in my collection and i will most certainly will be using it as my daily driver.

I'd say it even trumps the Oppo Find 7. The only major advantage to the Oppo is the display, which probably won't offer anything noticeable except for poor battery life and apps that look REALLY bad due to resolution differences. It also has Android 4.3 instead of 4.4.2 like the Sony, isn't waterproof, has fewer radio bands, etc. That being said, I'm considering buying the Find 7A just because it has a 5.5 inch screen but is only 75mm wide! Pretty sweet. I wish I could find more information on the camera sensor that the Oppo Find 7 uses...

It may drain the battery but hasn't it got rapid charging abilities?

Yeh the 7a seems to be the more sensible of the two, until things are refined and smoothed out qhd and 64 bit (i know the oppo doesn't have 64bit) is not all that important other than spec hungry whores having bragging rights.

Im more than happy with 1080p and i just like refinement and a media focused phone and the Z2 covers that nicely. It also has a good camera, battery is large enough and does have power saving features, stereo front facing speakers, specs mean it should be smooth and a light skin and UI seems good.

I know i have made the right choice for me.

We all have our own likes and I'm in no way slating the S5 or the M8.

I just believe that by Sony not following the trend with Fingerprint Scanner or trying to do anything to fancy with the camera they got it spot on.

Tweaks to build, upgraded specs, software enhancements yeh smooth Sony.

Re: Xperia Z2 phone of 2014 thus far?

Not discrediting the z2, looks like one hell of a phone.

However, the z2, Samsung, and Nokia have all kinda copied the HTC and m8 (not that it's a bad thing, but true nonetheless).

M7 and the m8 have dual front facing speakers, now the z2 does.

M8 has two camera lenses, one to capture depth information and one regular one. This is designed for a bokeh like effect, which Samsung, Nokia, and even the z2 all are doing with software.

Imo, it just seems like HTC is trying new things, and these other companies see that and then implement it into their phones.

Like I said, not discrediting any of these manufacturers, these are just my opinion.

I'm not sure how the rapid charging will turn out. It may compensate for the swift battery drain... Assuming you aren't ever away from the proprietary charger and its rapid charging abilities. You'd have to have 2 or more. Or you could carry one with you everywhere.

My other concern is heat dissipation during the rapid charging. I work with batteries every day, and I know that rapid charging leads to intense heat. Intense heat shortens the lifespan of not only batteries, but electronic components in general. I know they are using special heat dissipating materials, but I'm almost positive that you'd need much more than that.

Was thinking the same thing and advancements in battery performance is difficult to implement and to get right.

Hence problems with batteries in everything from remotes to cars to mobile phones. That is why more focus is perhaps being put towards how the software works and these power saving features.

Heat dissipation is of course very valid and i was wondering how they would have got round that.

Quick charging is great and to knock minutes off is a great thing but safety is one that comes with that and also longevity in doing so what effects this feature will have will only tell over time .

Your never going to have a world where one OEM wont copy another to some degree, and i also believe and you have said this its implemented in different ways.

I like the Htc One M8 not so much the nano sim, to much of a pain to cut to size or phone my network and wait for a replacement. Other than that a very solid device and another well done to Htc.

Samsung have improved upon the S range and added in some great features, the Camera, power saving, Download Booster, water resistance ect.

But the Z2 for me is more refined and not going for the ridiculous but keeping it focused and that for me is a good thing.
