50mb of data on S5!!!!! Is it enough?

AC Question

I've heard elsewhere that this (50mb) was "way" to small for a galaxy s5. Plz I want to know if this will be ideal!!???!! I am around wifi for most of the day, except when i go to school. I wont be using it while I am in school, but a few google searches would be nice (no email, no downloads). I don't want any data overages, but I do want to use my phone to its full potential; is 50mb a month enough??? Also how much kb does a webpage take up? Thanks!!!

I will add a short account of my own experience. When I was about to get my first smartphone I had no idea at all what my data consumption might be. There are online methods of calculating it but they are too vague. At that time, the Vodafone company (this is UK), in response to criticism of it for not offering unlimited data plans, said "500mb is enough". If I had trusted that, and chosen such a plan accordingly, I should have found myself very limited in what I could do with my phone. Instead, I chose an unlimited data pay-as-you-go tariff with the Three network. That turned out to be the right choice because I find that I use about 7gb a month.
Your usage will no doubt be very different from mine, but I think you can fairly safely assume that usage will be higher than you calculate, no matter how careful your calculations.

There's a game changer. I am worried that the young OP will get locked into a deal he/she can't get out of or use. I guess the carrier, wherever it is, is hooking people on a budget with s tempting deal, expecting them to overrun. Who wouldn't.
The original question on another thread was 50mb, 250mb or 500mb?
If the OP can stretch to 250 or 500, it might be a lot cheaper in the long run. If 50mb is the max budget, I know some carriers like Verizon have high data overage charges. I wish we knew the plan.

Re: 50mb of data on s5!!!!! Almeuit, spookdroid, and madd54, and others, plzzz help!!!!!!!!!

This was asked 6 times and I'm really sad!!! No one is giving me a purely honest answer. I am going to get an samsung galaxy s5, with a 50mb plan. This is all I can afford, no one is giving me detail, only the 3 people stated above. I have wifi most of the time and I will only go to school without wifi!!!! Is 50mb enough???!!!?? Plz help!!!! How many searches on chrome can I do (with data compression/reduction)??? Please help me!!! I need honest opinions, don't be afraid to contradict with my views. Simply tell me, is 50mb enough?? Plz help me :-(

I see every post apart from yours as an honest answer.

If you want me to give you a one word answer:
No.

For a more extended answer, it depends. Lets do a car analogy. The amount of gas you use isn't just dependent on how far you go, it also matters how fast you get there, and how much load you're carrying. If you go 90mph for 1 mile towing 1 ton, you'll use more gas than 40 towing nothing. Same with internet, if you get 50 megabits, and watch YouTube, you'll get 1080p, using more data. If you get 1 or less megabits, you'll get lower quality and use less.

Why not get an S4, or S3, and use the savings to get more data? Also, FreedomPop has good prices for 500meg a month.

Re: 50mb of data on samsung galaxy s5

Spookdroid or madd54 plz answer, anyone else can answer too!!!! As read earlier, I plan on getting a samsung galaxy s5. I can really only afford the 50mb of data plan. I have wifi almost all the time (except) at school. I can't use the internet at school, so the data is really for emergencies! I also wanna use google chrome, for very light searches (300 webpages a month) (with data compression); WILL IT LAST???? I really want the phone and this plan. It's so convenient. But my wishes don't matter, I purely need your opinions, please!!! Thank you to all those who answered earlier, this will be my final post on this topic. Thank you!!!!

I have used 10,000,000% of that data before... But, to answer your question, a Google search on mobile with compression uses around 0.5-.15mb per search. This is the search only, not counting when you click on the search result.

I did a few tasks and logged the data usage.

Keep in mind that this doesn't include stuff that syncs. For example, weather used 130mb last month for me, though admittedly I update it frequently.

With 50 MB I'd honestly just not even use mobile data. I'd use my phone strictly on wifi only. 50 MB has very little breathing room.

We like and wanted to help you OP / Original Poster / Questioner.
I am sure you didn't know you were creating conflicting threads.
We tried to give an honest answer saying it won't be enough. Some have proved it is possible. It would be very hard to stick to. You possibly had limited time to get to a store or order one.

Let us know what you are thinking.

What the deal was and the extra charges would be interesting too, but you can keep that to yourself.

Re: Galaxy s5

What monthly data plan do you think is good for the S5; 50mb, 300mb or 500mb. My house has wifi and I will only do a few (5 or 6) google searches a day, like very light usage, I don't depend on data, but I want to use my phone to its full potential. I will do all my downloads and emailing on wifi, so that's not an issue. I'm also out of my house for 8 hours a day (not counting weekends), if that's any help. Finally, will android use a lot (like more than 1mb) background data?? Thank you! All help appreciated.

Unless you turn data off until you know you are at somewhere with wifi that won't last a day.

No!

And here's a sneaky data plan killer many totally overlook: MMS!
Consider that sending any image or video that you send via SMS/MMS will always be sent via mobile networks. Even if you're tightly wrapped into a strong WiFi bubble like at home or at work. SMS/MMS are always sent via mobile networks. Eating up your data plan real fast!

So, to the OP: forget sending photos and videos via SMS/MMS totally! As in: completely! Use only internet apps when in a WiFi like eMail or IM (Instant Messaging, like Kik, Line, Tango, Viber, Telegram). And Dropbox. Dropbox, or similar, is your friend. You can set it to sync only when you're in range of a (specific, if you're particular) WiFi hotspot. Again, like at home or at work, etc.

Oh, and you can go wild on pure text SMS if you get an appropriate contract, because those are microscopically small files. MMS messages, however, are at least hundreds but usually thousands of times larger files. And they count as mobile data.

So it looks as if you're never going to be using the S5 to its full potential, OP. Not even close.
I would go for a refurbished S3, under warranty, if I were you and get a much better data plan. Mine is 1,2GB/month. With very light mobile use I can manage to stay within that range. But only just. No live streaming video News, sports games, or movies on mobile! Ever! Even though my phone could handle it just fine. My wallet can't. Or at least won't.

Everyone has given you the answer, but you don't want to hear it. The answer is NO. 50mb will not be enough. Stop asking the same question over and over. You already have the answer.

This thread has legs, it just keeps on running...I got a tablet for some elderly folks back home and even told them to get at least 1 GB / month data:-)

Yeah, but SMS/MMS run through a separate section of mobile data; they do not count against your data allowance, they count against your messaging limit and have a different rate than mobile data packets.

SMS/MMS run through a separate section of mobile data;

Correct.

they do not count against your data allowance, they count against your messaging limit and have a different rate than mobile data packets.

Incorrect: they count against both!

However, there are many contracts with limitless SMS (not limitless MMS!), because SMS traffic costs ISPs/telco providers virtually nothing to run. Get one of those.

Here I will give the simple answer. YES

Here is more detail. Yes a 50mb service will work for an S5 but it is freaking pointless and not enough. You should just get a feature phone till you can afford a real data plan. There is no "need" for a smartphone with a data plan over just a feature phone. You need things like food, water, and air not a smartphone.
