So is this the same marketing BS that iphone 12 users are finding in that no matter what your connection is the notification shows 5g? I know I don't have 5g. And I checked the network data settings. no way to choose LTE only etc. This desperation from the carriers to push vapor 5g network is pathetic. End rant :'(

I remember that my bosses AT&T phone displayed "5G" well over a year ago, just happened one morning. And we were not in a 5G area, still aren't to this day. I had to explain to him that AT&T was just "showing" that his phone was 5G capable when we finally get it. He was confused and not happy.

Just 5g. This is more of a rant than anything by me. I am well versed in the 5g technology and it's variations from carrier to carrier. I just hate that Verizon is pushing the OEM's to indicate something that does not exist. And it would be nice if Google gave us the option to turn 5g off if we wanted to. Unless it's buried somewhere that I am not seeing.

Go to settings >> network and internet >> mobile network >> preferred network type. Change network type to LTE/CDMA.

I know on my Note 20U 5g on att not great , I do get it here and there then it goes LTE , my Tmobile 5g is way better , ill see when my pixel 5 arrives.

So let me confess and take inserted foot from mouth. I would never have believed I would have a Verizon 5g signal out where I live. So I was in my basement last night watching a movie. Picked my phone up and saw LTE. Surprised by that so I did a speed test in my basement and got 12mb down 5mb up. Went back upstairs and got a 5g signal. speed test 75mb down and 40 something up. this leads me to believe I am getting a sub 6ghz 5g band connection. And just as others have found that connection can have wide varying speed tests. I just tried it again and not it's down to 38 down and 11.5 up. I did change the network from Global to LTE / CDMA and that forced a LTE only connection. Did a speed test again and I got 78 down 16 up. LOL. Just as reported sometimes the low band 5g can actually be slower than the LTE!. I would rather have the battery than a supposedly really fast connection to just text and read the news which is most of my needs. I think I'll keep it LTE only for now.

Keeping it on LTE should still pick up low band 5G on Verizon

Mine does the same thing. It says 5G but the speeds are not there. I looked in my usage in the My Verizon app and it says i have not used any 5G data. The whole thing is misleading.

So folks with a Verizon model Pixel 5 are seeing a 5G icon in the status bar? My wife's new Pixel 5 just displays the plain old LTE icon and we are supposedly in a nationwide 5G area (whatever they are calling it). I thought I read that the November security update was delayed for the 5 & 4a5G for Verizon users so Verizon could enable 5G on our phones?

The update has not rolled out, it is scheduled to roll out this week at somepoint. As of now out of the box you can get UWB but no nationwide. Some people have flashed the Nov unlocked update and it does get a 5G icon in the status bar but in my testing it's literally just the icon it doesnt hook up to NSA 5G at any point, so that work around doesn't work.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming.

I'm just following along here... I have a new iPhone 12 from Verizon and I'm seeing 5G icon all the time although not getting 5G by me..just might be same thing with Pixel as stated by OP... Also did you get Pixel with 5G sim inside? I had one on the iPhone and ordered one for my Fold..I'm not near 5G so can't test phones...

On T-mo it only shows 5G when I am in a 5G area. It tested faster than LTE. The top two results were in the same spot. Using my 2 year old SIM card.

Her phone did come with a new SIM inside, so I assume it's compatible. I think for Verizon specific devices we have to wait for the November update. There is a lot of misinformation available in different sites, and from Verizon reps. I'm just trying to make sense of it all and make sure her new phone is working the way it's supposed to....at this point in time.

Anybody remember the 4G rollout years ago? And the confusion.

Yeah big time confusion as usual... SIM had 5G on it when I removed to check lol who knows... So much advertising with fast speeds and change plans for nothing...

VZN 5G in my area when it shows as 5G is more like 3G speeds (all single digit up/down speeds)

According to the Google Pixel update page the November security update for the Verizon models is now delayed until around the 16th. All of this makes me wonder if Verizon's "nationwide" 5G coverage really has been deployed to as much of the country as their coverage map indicates?
