6.0 Marshmallow: How's your battery life after the update?

As far as defining "bad"... my battery will barely make it through ONE DAY when I was hardly using it.

Before the MM update I'd get FOUR DAYS on a charge when I wasn't hardly using the phone.

My battery life began dwindling when Verizon enabled the 5G wi-fi connection on my router at home. When I told the phone to forget the 5G connection and go back to the old wi-fi connection, the battery life improved greatly.

I had been putting the phone on the charger at night with about 50% battery remaining. Last night, after telling the phone to forget the 5G connection on Monday, the phone had 80% battery life left.

It's most definitely not Bluetooth and most definitely wireless.
I turned off wireless a few days ago and forgot to turn it on, and have been wondering how my phone started getting amazing battery life.

I have been playing music through my Bluetooth connector for about 3 hours this morning. Off charger for 6 hours, battery at 86%.
I never connect to WiFi at work, but for some reason, if I have WiFi on in the afternoon, I see a huge hit.

This is so odd. Now screen usage is being reported as the biggest battery drain... and I believe it because the front of the phone stays warm. What makes this odd is that the screen is off. Blank. Dark. No light. How can the screen drain the battery when it is not displaying anything?

I tried to get to the bottom of this, but to no avail. I tried un-installing as many apps as I could and get the phone down to a bare bones installation. I tried removing as many app permissions as I could. The phone was still draining a 100% charge in less than one day with absolutely no user input. There's not much more I can try in lieu of learning some developer skills and I'm just not up to sink the time into that.

HOWEVER... I found a procedure that's working for me. My phone is behaving, at least for the moment, and battery usage seems to be normal again. This is what I did.

Backing up for a quick minute. When the initial 6.0 update was installed, I went through the installation prompts and chose a custom set of selections of how I wanted the phone configured. For example, I opted out of all data collection and other little things like that. Also, when prompted, I signed into my Google account at the installation prompt. After the installation was complete, I immediately went into deleting all of the bloatware and installing the apps I like instead of the default apps. For example I prefer a different calendar and a different photo viewer than default. Doing the update in this manner, somehow, facilitated the terrible battery drain on my phone.

I decided to try to do a factory reset using the Settings menu (not the side buttons) and allow the installation to proceed using all of the default selections and NOT signing into my Google account. Further, after the installation was complete I did NOT delete bloatware or install any new apps... and guess what???? My battery drain is back to normal! I'm going to run through at least one full charge and then go about configuring and customizing the phone the way I want it and see if battery use stays normal. Maybe I'll only do a few changes at a time to see if I can catch the alteration that is causing the problem.

When my battery was draining fast, the phone stayed warm to the touch; both front and back. Now when I pick up the phone it's ice cold. What's weird is that my Wifi and cell radios are STILL constantly active, but now there is no unusual battery drain. I don't get that, and I don't really care, I just want my 5 or 6 days on a single charge and I'm back to LOVING this phone :D

So many problems with the new update of Motorola 6.0

I have been having so many problems with the new update of my android 6.0. My battery life isn't even lasting 1 day with no use. It used to last me 3 days straight. Another problem is my notifications will not show on my screen however my phone gives vibrates to tell me I have a notification. I have also had problems with my home button. I have a Motorola and there for the button is on the screen it is not separate. In order to get to my home screen I need to clear my history. Another problem is that I cannot drag my settings down from the top of my phone this is really annoying as I can not access the torch. My phone also does random resets and deleted most of my photos from gallery.
Android needs to fix this problem urgently otherwise I will be buying a Samsung or even iPhone.

Ditto on buying another brand phone... and going to a different network too. My battery is back to misbehaving and I'm nearly fed up with it. I can't tell if the problem is with Motorola or Verizon though.

I leave for work in the morning with 100% charge. My phone stays in my pocket doing absolutely nothing. Eight hours later I'm down to 10%. Ridiculous.

I'd recommend installing Greenify and turning on aggressive doze (no root needed!). This puts your phone into doze when it's on standby within minutes instead of an hour. That helps battery life immensely as well.

Marshmellow supposedly does what Greenify does; why duplicate the effort.

I said it in my previous comment. Doze only kicks in if your phone is completely still, and it'll wait at least an hour to do so. Greenify's aggressive doze will put your phone in doze mode after only a few minutes and will keep it on even if you're moving around, assuming you don't wake the phone.

Most people are carrying their phones around and using them all day, so doze rarely gets to kick in during the day. Greenify helps with that.

For the past few days my battery life is pretty bad, I've done all the usual stuff, cleared cache, checked GSam nothing looks any different then before this started. Today for example, phone off charger time: 6 hours 23 minutes, 3 text messages, 21 minutes of phone calls, good signal strength minimum 3 bars, time without signal 0, 1 hour 9 minutes screen on time, and I'm sitting here at 42%. Can't find a single item that is causing this. On my old original Turbo with this same usage, I would be sitting at about 65%. And I'm 10 days past my return period with Verizon. Anyone else seeing lousy battery life?

Check out this thread that was started over a year ago. Users with myriad devices on different carriers are describing and experiencing exactly what we're going through. Funny thing... people were reporting this problem when Lollipop was pushed onto Kitkat phones... and now with Marshmellow being pushed onto Lollipop phones. Multiple days of battery life before the push; less than 1 day after.

I didn't read all the posts but a few interesting ones like the guy who got a phone, liked it, and bought his dad the same phone. His dad is experiencing the battery drain while he is not. Why? This is looking very much like what I'd call a bug... hardware or software, idk... but a bug nonetheless. Manufacturers use painstaking process controls to make every phone identical, and after being assembled, every phone is loaded with the same code. A glitch, a switch, a setting, something somewhere is causing some phones to drain while others are fine.

I just did my millionth FACTORY RESET tonight in pursuit of trying some more things. I'm now in Safe Mode, which if I understand correctly, disables all 3rd party apps unless they are manually activated. With my phone at 100% charge, no 3rd party apps running, and sitting still overnight... if I wake up again tomorrow with a nearly-dead battery, I can only assume this is a Google-Motorola-Verizon system issue. Being a *system* issue, I have no control over it and will therefore seek remedy from my provider.

So I stopped into Verizon and they weren't able to do much for me. No settings seemed askew and no internal memo's or mention of battery drains on their forums were found. The next step is to call the Android help line at Motorola (1-800-734-5870)... which I did.

After getting Motorola on the phone I was immediately escalated to Level II support after advising them that I've already tried doing a factory reset. Level II support asked for my IMEI number, and apparently this number allows them to see a handful of real-time technical data about my phone... such as if I'm on WiFi, if I'm roaming, etc.

The first thing Level II support asked is that I go into the reset menu (Settings > Backup & Reset) and advise whether or not "Automatic Restore" is active, which it is on my phone. The support person advised that this makes a big difference because if it is active, a factory reset will NOT reset all settings to default. As the name of this function implies, many of the phone's settings will be automatically restored to previous values. DOH! When you do a factory reset, make sure this is DE-ACTIVATED.

Initially the Automatic Restore button was grayed out and I couldn't change its' setting. Well, on the same menu, two selections up, you'll see the option to "Back Up My Data"; turn this on and you should see the Auto Restore function come online. I did another factory reset with this function turned off. The support person advised to NOT install any apps for 24 hours (interesting...) and that he'll call me back on Sunday to see if it's fixed.

So we'll see...if this doesn't fix my battery drain, the guy said we'll need to escalate to Level III support, whatever that is.

On the bright side, Motorola support is pretty darn good. I called the number listed above and got a real person within a reasonably short wait time. The person was quite knowledgeable and when I got transferred to Level II, they had a "come-up-to-speed" conversation behind the scenes so that I didn't have to repeat myself in describing my problem. Excellent Moto! (now fix my phone)

And btw, you didn't bother reading what anybody had to say on the battery issue before posting... so don't get pissy if someone misses any of your previous comments.

Whoa buddy, my tone was in no way pissy in that post. You asked why anyone would use Greenify now with the advent of doze, and I answered you politely. Someone here's getting pissy but it sure ain't me. You're the one that got slapped with a mod warning earlier in this thread responding to me. Keep it civil.

Back to batteries.....so after most recent update to 6.0...charged up Thurs. night and this morning still at 50%, and this is a new phone, so a lot of things going on, updating apps and settings....but it's new, so perhaps that's helped.

You guys may not like this, but "Level 2" support at Motorola essentially culminates in the factory reset; if that doesn't fix the problem, then there is typically no further remote assistance to be done. You have to send your phone to Moto for them to fix.

The good news is that Moto offers two options to send in your phone, and one of which is totally free.

Return & Repair: Moto will send a postage paid label. Use this to return your phone. The Moto technician will take up to 4 days to fix your phone, and then send you back the exact phone you had before.

Advance & Exchange: Moto will send you a new phone and a label for returning your old phone. This requires a $250 hold on a credit card until they receive the old phone. There is also a $24.99 fee which they call a fee for the "Premium" service.

I chose the A & E option because I didn't want to bother being without a phone for a week, or have to ask Verizon to revert me back to an old phone that I still have. Moto said I'll have the new phone in about 2 days. I'm sure shipping time will vary based on your location... but this seems like GREAT service to me. If this new phone works, I'll be inclined to forgive this snafu and return to being a happy customer.

I hope this helps someone else who may be going through this very frustrating and disappointing problem. This is actually a great phone and a great operating system and I look forward to getting back on track. Au revoir les amis.
