So I stopped into Verizon and they weren't able to do much for me. No settings seemed askew and no internal memo's or mention of battery drains on their forums were found. The next step is to call the Android help line at Motorola (1-800-734-5870)... which I did.
After getting Motorola on the phone I was immediately escalated to Level II support after advising them that I've already tried doing a factory reset. Level II support asked for my IMEI number, and apparently this number allows them to see a handful of real-time technical data about my phone... such as if I'm on WiFi, if I'm roaming, etc.
The first thing Level II support asked is that I go into the reset menu (Settings > Backup & Reset) and advise whether or not "Automatic Restore" is active, which it is on my phone. The support person advised that this makes a big difference because if it is active, a factory reset will NOT reset all settings to default. As the name of this function implies, many of the phone's settings will be automatically restored to previous values. DOH! When you do a factory reset, make sure this is DE-ACTIVATED.
Initially the Automatic Restore button was grayed out and I couldn't change its' setting. Well, on the same menu, two selections up, you'll see the option to "Back Up My Data"; turn this on and you should see the Auto Restore function come online. I did another factory reset with this function turned off. The support person advised to NOT install any apps for 24 hours (interesting...) and that he'll call me back on Sunday to see if it's fixed.
So we'll see...if this doesn't fix my battery drain, the guy said we'll need to escalate to Level III support, whatever that is.
On the bright side, Motorola support is pretty darn good. I called the number listed above and got a real person within a reasonably short wait time. The person was quite knowledgeable and when I got transferred to Level II, they had a "come-up-to-speed" conversation behind the scenes so that I didn't have to repeat myself in describing my problem. Excellent Moto! (now fix my phone)
