6.7.247 ics leak

I'm not fully opposed to rooting, just hesitant in case something does go wrong that isn't related, but requires exchange. So my issue with that is more with the un-rooting. XD

Still, thanks for the replies.

Definitely not. ICS updates are designed to only install on top of 905. You really truly need to read my FAQ and HoB OP before you get yourself into trouble. These are dangerous builds to be messing with unless you know exactly what you're doing. You can't FXZ from these.

.246 made a huge difference in Battery life over .244, so far .247 is following .246 in good battery use, although I'm still on my first charge cycle with .247. I'm still seeing some Bluetooth issues with my Toyota Entune system that .905 does not have after my truck is turned off. (Bluetooth doesn't turn off on the phone even though the truck is fully turned off.) All in all I'm happy with the battery improvements that I'm seeing. (Launch day Bionic at 1Ghz)

It depends on your comfort level. I tell most people they should have the safety net of being able to FXZ back to 905. But here's the thing....I've been working on the HoB since June. The thing has been battle tested by over 1200 users (yea, seriously). I've moved us forward through _11_ leaks so far. 247 is "probably" going to be OTA at this point. (I know, I said that about 246 but moto surprised everyone with this 247 leak). The process to move forward is proven by not just Bionic users but also the RAZR and D4 users. If you need the safety net of being able to FXZ to 905, stay on 232. If you can accept a bit of risk, 247 is a great build. I recommend a factory reset coming from such early builds as 232. It'll give you a better experience. So, up to you, but, I'm about to put out a new HoB version that speeds up the process in a few minutes.

Samuri, I've been debating the past few days about taking the plunge forward (like many I've been on 232 for awhile and quite happy, save for battery life). When you say "safety net", what would you be referring to? And, now that there have been so many leaks forward, besides not being able to go back, what risks would you be referring to?
Thanks in advance, and thanks for all your hard work and advice to all of us, much appreciated! :)

You lose the safety net of being able to do a full flash back to 905 should something happen.

You need to understand what the security really means. When I tell people "it means you can't go back to 905" I often get a confused "so? I wouldn't want to anyway!" response. Which is ignorant of how the updates work. Updates do not work on top of other updates. They ONLY update *ONE SPECIFIC VERSION*. In this case, that'd be 905. So you update to a build past 235, you can't FXZ back to 905 (the safety net I'm referring to...if something goes wrong with your phone, an FXZ puts it back to factory defaults and fixes almost any issue you may have....except, with 235+, you can't). If you can't get back to 905, which is the ONLY version any ICS update is going to install on top of, how do you install a new update? The answer is the procedure the HoB is built on top of. But it involves a measure of risk. Since you can't revert to 905 due to security, and the updates require you to be on 905, we have to put your phone into a non-working state that will allow the update to work. This is done by flashing the 905 system and preinstall images (who don't have security on them) and the boot img of the update you're trying to install. This bricks your phone until the update is successfully applied in recovery. Since it has the boot img that the update is looking for, and the system and preinstall img's from 905, the update's assertion checks pass and we're able to install it. However, should something go wrong in this process, and it has for some, there's no FXZ to get you back to a working phone. So if it all goes well, you can move back and forth between the 235 and 247 builds (they all have the same security so you can downgrade if we need to, but, not further than 235). If it doesn't, you'll need to rely on my mini-fxz mode in the House of Bionic that will attempt to unbrick you. It's worked for all who've tried it, but, again...there's still risk involved.

Gotcha, now have to see if I'm willing to accept the risk. I've read your FAQ and related posts/threads here and elsewhere, and I am comfortable with installing such things. Thanks again.

Now things make a lot more sense. I was confused why you were saying the updates are designed to be installed on to of 905, but yet could still install the new leaks without it. Essentially you're tricking the new leak into thinking you're on 905 without being fully on it. I was about to think you could install the new ones without the work around, the same way I installed 232 without using your script, going right off the sd card

And then you'd wonder why the hell you were getting an error 7 in recovery when you tried. ;) Yea, this method was created for RAZR/D4 by Matt Groff and he gave it to us. I simply automated the living hell out of it over the last few months. The biggest trick in complex software development is making it so easy that it seems like the program isn't necessary. The House of Bionic falls into that category. :) Soon the Linux/Mac crowd will be able to play, as well.

Yes I get that. I'm just saying had you tried to do so, you'd be staring at an error 7 in recovery going "WTF?" :D

SamuriHL, first of all you have got to be the most amazing tech person I have ever seen. Your level of patience is incredible. The work you have done is insurmountable. I have to say, after following your posts on the ics, I have learned more about my phone then I would have ever cared to in the past. I have been recently following the wireless moot on droid forums. I am now very intrigued in loading house of bionic and taking the plunge. I completely understand your explanation of not going back to 905. I had the ics leak version 2233 and loved it. It seemed at the time that the ota may be coming soon, so I fxz back to 902 and took the ota to 905, which is where I reside today. Since then, my 4g data drops have been unbearable. Prior to going to the ics, I didn't seem to have the same level of drops that I was seeing on here. Now seeing that this may take another 2-3 weeks, I'm very tempted to take the plunge and be done with it. I have rsd lite 5.7 installed on my pc. I have briefly looked at your instructions (definitely will take a harder look at them prior to moving forward), but want to ensure that I don't screw this up. I don't have much of a back ground in messing with this stuff, but I find it exciting. I may need a little more detailed steps to walk through this process. I know where to get the HoB stuff and where the Faq's reside, however, I am unclear on where I download them to. I get that rsd goes on my pc. I followed a video to work though the rsd and fxz back to 902. That seemed pretty self explanatory and easy. I'm a fast learner but very cautious in moving forward to ensure I don't screw this up. I want to move forward because I am tired of being a 4g drop out. Could you provide additional assistance?

Samuri,

Just curious what your day job is? You spend so much time helping out this community I fear your boss may get mad... :P

All the pieces are installers. (The RSD you have installed is irrelevant. The HoB uses a private copy that gets installed into the SamuriHL_HouseOfBionic directory...it will NOT work without it). You just install it one installer at a time. 7.7 installer, FXZ installer, RSD 5.7 installer, and 247 update installer. I recommend you do a dry run with the phone NOT connected before you do anything so you can see the process you're going to be attempting. Choose 247 at the main menu, then install. Say N at all the prompts. This will walk you through in sort of a "demo mode" so you can get a feel for the process and what you'll be required to do. As long as you pay attention and do what it tells you, it'll be fine. It's the people that think they know better, or make assumptions, or simply don't bother reading what's on the screen that get themselves into trouble and on my support todo list. I will help all people who ask for it. HOWEVER, if it's a problem that could have been easily avoided by a little reading you may get an earful while I'm providing help as I seriously hate wasting my time on stupid things.

Samuri,

Let's not go there. I'm a software engineer. I multitask quite well and get all my work done.

Alright, let me test my understanding. I'm installing all of these to my pc, or my phone? I assume pc and then connect my phone in flash mode, right?

Too dumb of a question? Told you, I am really green at this and just need some clarification on this so I understand it correctly. Thanks!

I figured as much. I'll look over the FAQ again and let you know if I have any questions it doesn't answer.

Thx samurai :)

This is my first post. I will probably be put off, but I am interested in learning. I want ICS but have no clue how to get it or how to install it. I guess you can say I am a little illiterate when it comes to this side of phones. Any guidance/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Just read everything about House of Bionic. You should be fine.
