$799 for the Xoom? Ouch!

At $800, it's almost as if Motorola doesn't want this product to be successful.
Define "successful".

Should BMW stop making the 7 series? It's not going to be the best-selling sedan in the world, so what's the point?

That's not an apt analogy. There are dozens of types of cars. There are two real competing tablet OS and Android is the underdog. It's very difficult to beat the top guy by charging more for the same specs (assuming ipad2 refreshes with similar hardware).

This is a fair point. Many of us are assuming the Xoom want to sell 800,000 units in in Q1 & Q2 2011. If their target is closer to 100,000 or 200,000 then they could meet their target and be successful, in their mind.

My thought is they want close to 800,000 untils and will not reach that and thus will not be successful at the $800 pricetag.

No, but they shouldn't quit making the 1 series, or the 3 series either.

Think BMW would be OK only making the 7 series? Especially if it's competitors were a better known brand long established AND cheaper?

Again though we have to keep in mind that the number of units they plan on shipping to retail doesn't always reflect the number of units they actually plan on selling. You always want to ship (and produce for that matter) slightly more units than you plan on selling. That gives you wiggle room to compensate for potentially selling more than originally anticipated and so places can keep a healthy stock (although not too healthy).

This seems to be counter to what companies actually do. It seems though that many companies build up demand and short supplying their product.

Motorola has already stated that they will have a 7" tablet as well as the 10".

Plus, the "1 series" and "3 series" already exist in the market. The 5 series is the iPad, except the steering wheel is locked. The 3 series is maybe the Viewsonic GTab, but it's hard for me to even compare that to a BMW, since it doesn't have market access out of the box. As for the 1 series, same dilemma as the Viewsonic. Let's say Notion Ink Adam is the 1 series, and they tightened the lugnuts by hand.

I agree with that as well. Companies like Apple and Sony have a long history of doing this. I think it depends on the product. If it's a product that people are genuinely excited about, than it's actually a good business ploy.

I'm personally still hoping the price won't end up being 799 at launch. Given the spelling mistakes in the Best Buy ad, I am hoping it is either fake or was not finalized yet, which means that the price could change. We'll see. I currently have an iPad and was all set to sell it and buy a Xoom, but that was when it looked like the price was going to be 699. I guess I'll wait and see what really ends up happening when it is finally released.

we also need to keep in mind that motorola, unlike apple, is strictly a hardware manufacturer. they don't sell tv shows, movies, audio, apps, etc. they don't have any way to up their margins. they don't get a cut of the data plans people buy. they have no way of profiting off of their sale once it's in the consumer's hands. so of course it'll be difficult for them to price hardware at extremely competitive price points.

i'm not sure how much apple is making off of each ipad sold, but i'm sure they're making bank off the money they skim off the top of everything they sell via itunes.

That's a good point.

Anyone notice in one of the videos it states 3g upgrade to 4g then in fine print something about at more of a cost? I thought it was going to be a swap or send out your xoom and they will upgrade at no cost or they talking about 4g being more money. YouTube - Motorola Xoom Official Video

Yeah I saw that. Not sure what the actual story will be. Maybe the upgrade will be free if you have a contract (as in 1-2 yr plan) and cost something if you don't?

The ONLY thing we really know about this product is that it's coming and it looks to be really fast. Everything to do with pricing, availability, and different models is still up in the air.

wow I would of never realized that!

Quick question for you all, even with the price I thin I am still going to get it, but I do not want the Verizon Data plan. So after the 1 month is done, I can just simply cancel it and then I will have WiFi only? No cancellation fees or anything? Thanks!

No one knows for sure yet, but that is the current rumor.

Not a rumor. You buy this thing full retail there is no ETF, just like with every other month to month contract.

We don't even know for sure yet if you need a 1 month plan, so how can you claim you know if it can be canceled without fees ect?

Because we know Verizon plans and pricing. If you buy something retail, even a phone. You can choose a month to month contract. If you have a month to month contract, there is NEVER an early termination fee.

The ETF only applies if you sign a contract. 1yr or 2yr. They would have a class action lawsuit on their hands if they tried charging an ETF for a month to month agreement and they didn't give you a discount on the product or service up front.

The "required service" bit is still up in the air, but Verizon's contract policies arn't.

Menno is right. No subsidy = No contract. It's not rocket science.

OK, you can claim to know for sure. But I can't, and I don't have faith in people who claim they know for sure.

We all know a rumor and can guess based on previous practices, but we don't know for sure.

It's not rocket science to understand this.
