$799 for the Xoom? Ouch!

Crazy not to release all versions, WiFi only large and small memory. 32gig seems anemic. I have almost maxed out the combined 40 gig on my Droid X, I would ass u me the apps on here and music and video will have you editing playlists like a mofo. Not really sold on tabs yet. But if they could wake up and sell all versions upon release, that would at least bring me into the stores to look. But not at the VZW stores, those are filled with Apple ******s.

It's a time to market thing. It's easier, faster, and much cheaper to bring one build to market, then flesh out the product line. Motorola has already indicated they will have a family of tablets. It would be another few months and tens of millions of dollars greater investment to bring out a family of devices. They just don't have that kind of time.

Also, as the flagship for Honeycomb, they probably have a fiduciary responsibility to Google to bring the product to market as fast as possible.

I don't really understand the complaining that Moto should have multiple versions ready to go at launch. Apple didn't have all versions available when the iPad launched. No one really knows the market for high-end Android tablets - there's seems to be a lot of interest and demand but it's a huge risk to launch with 4 or 6 different versions. What if only one or two of them sell? Or none? I don't think it's such a bad thing to launch with one version, gauge demand, and then ramp up production if sales go well. I would have preferred a WiFi-only device, with VZW selling MiFi-type devices for people who need cellular data, but that's not the way they went.

It's clear that some people are mad that it's expensive and they are priced out at $800+. I think the device is clearly worth a premium to the iPad - way better specs (even relative to the iPad2 specs from the WSJ story), flagship Android 3.0 tablet, and Google Experience device.

And the Xoom has 32GB plus expandable memory, so up to 64GB with current 32GB microSDHC cards.

I was planning on getting it if it was $700, $800 is just too much out of my price range. ($700 was too, but I could sacrifice a few things for it.) Guess I'll be either waiting for the WiFi model or picking up another stock honeycomb tab.

Im out too at $800, thats just crazy IMO. Ill wait for a wifi only version or keep waiting for a wifi only android tablet (no galaxy tab for me, junk). I refuse to pay for another data plan.

Waited and waited for this and I was OK, not happy, but OK at $699. $799means I wait longer. Not paying that.
We shouldn't have to pay the price of two and a half netbooks for something a tablet.
Maybe we boycott. Show Motorola what their price point should be. None of us buys one until the price drops. Let them pile up stock and force them to drop the price.

so... now I am looking into getting a nook color $250 rooting it and putting honeycomb on it. It is not the xoom but hey.. it will work for my needs.

Dont understand what the issue is... The 32GB iPad is 729 and doesnt even have a camera... And we all knew it was going to be around this price from all the rumors... Is it a lot? yes... But it compares with whats on the market now

I would get one if they didn't force you spend even more money to get a month of data that would THEN unlock the damn wifi. That is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Stop trying to bleed me for money and just sell it to me at a fair price. Apparently the one time sale is no longer good for any corporation. I'm looking at you video game industry and your hate for people reselling you games...

Comparing equivalent specs, the Xoom is competitive. The problem is that there is no Wi-Fi only Xoom to compete at the $500 price point. That alone will turn many people off. I know about 20 people with iPads and only 1 got a 3G version.

considering the xoom has double the ipad spec, i actually find the xoom priced just right.. now the big mistake by moto is not releasing a wifi only option with a lower price

no thanks, the Galaxy 2 will be out soon enough.

moto's attitude towards customers + verizon's locking in to data plan + overpriced = fail.

You gotta be sh****'n me!!!!

WTF?!?!? You mean to tell me that if I buy a Xoom and only wanted to use Wifi, you will hit me with a "F**k You, Pay Me" fee? I mean damn, that's charging me for not using your network!!! Go F**k yourself, Verizon.

For me, $800 for a media consumption device is too, too high. The Zoom would be totally cool for entertainment, reading and killing time, but when doing serious work, you still need a legit computer with a full keyboard. Tablets as a whole, in my opinion, are a want, not a need. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with indulging a want, but for $800? Fortunately, with the dearth of medium and high end tablets coming out over the next 6-9 months, I expect that there will be no shortage of perfectly good sub $500 tablets. You just have to be patient if you’re not up for paying 8 bones. If you want to be the first on the block to have the baddest tablet on the market, pay your $800 and keep on stepping.

Some of the arguments on here are so ridiculous that it makes me sad to be an Android user.

So you want to use WiFi only on the Xoom and you're complaining because you need a month of 3G data to unlock it? How about you wait for the WiFi only Xoom to be released then? You don't desperately need to get a tablet right now you know.

Also, the $800 price tag is just right, considering the iPad 32gb 3G + WiFi model is $729 and doesn't have HD display, Tegra 2 proc, as powerful of a GPU, rear and front facing cams, among other things.

I agree that the lack of options is quite disappointing on Moto's part. They could have at least included a lower priced 16gb model for those who don't need 32 on a tablet. However, if they release the wifi only version within a reasonable time-frame then I would settle for that.

Frankly, I'd be more pissed off if I was a Galaxy Tab owner. Isn't the 4G GTab coming out soon with a slightly faster processor? I wouldn't be surprised if they go ahead and launch a Galaxy Tab 2 before the year ends also.

First of all, I think that this might be the most intelligent forum thread I have ever read. No flaming, lots of great points and discussion.

For me, the problem isn't the price tag on its own. As others have mentioned, the comparable iPad in terms of memory is similarly priced but with inferior hardware. My problem is with the notion that Google has a real opportunity here to capture market share. Honeycomb looks to be an absolute winner in terms of tablet OS and with great hardware should crush the iPad.

But the lay person will ALWAYS turn to iPad because that is what they are "trained" to do. This device needs to be $100 LESS than the similar iPad, not $100 MORE. There needs to be incentive for the lay person to choose Android over Apple and price is the only incentive. The lay person doesn't know or care about what makes one better. They only know that iPads are cool.

I hope that the Toshiba or LG device is priced properly so Android has a real opportunity to get market share. This price point will never allow that to happen, regardless of hardware.

I understand that every one is pissed about the $800 price tag but what gets me is very few complain about a 4" Android/iOS/BB/Nokia handset is $500 to $600+ off contract?

How in the heck does an off-contract iPhone cost over $600 when a WiFi only iPad cost $499? Same with the Xoom. $800 for a 10" screen and all the storage is not that much more than a 4" phone.

That is what burns me up...the price of a $300 4" phone that somehow never gets below $500 even after 2 years.

But as always since that's the way it is then everyone accepts it but complains about a 10" tablet costing $800 knowing damn well that price is going to drop in the next 30-60 days and even more after that. But the Droid X is still $599 at Best Buy
