A big Nexus 6 might be a big mistake for Google

I do wonder with all the hate for a large screen nexus,if it arrives at a 349 pricepoint for 64GB (just like the OnePlus) would that change the majority's mind?

5.9 inch qHD screen, Snapdragon 805, 3 gig of RAM and 64 gig of RAM for $349? They probably wouldn't be able to keep up with demand..... As long as they don't just wrap them in bubble wrap and throw them in a generic box and ship them like Oneplus was doing.....

I think anywhere from $399 - 499 and they will sell a ton of these things.... $499 is still $100 cheaper than you can get an LG G3 and $200 - 400 less than a Note 4 or iPhone 6....

Jesus! Don't scare me like that! 5.2" is a deal breaker for me.

I don't care if they ALSO have a 5.2.. I just really want a 5.9 inch phablet Nexus... PERFECT for what I've been looking for.....

5.2 isn't worth the cost to upgrade from my Nexus 5......

They still sell the iPhone 5s...or is that too large? The also still sell the S3 Mini and S4 Mini...or are those too large as well? I know lots of women but all of them are pretty techy. My wife is not technical at all, at all (almost embarrassingly non-technical, bless her little Brazilian heart) and the iPhone 6 appeals fine to her though she actually chose to get a 5s yesterday because she didn't think the 6 was worth $100 more. She won't be caught dead with anything android, poor thing. I know a female F-16 pilot and she loves large phones.

As mentioned above, I don't really think it's a man vs. women thing.

My comment was by no means suggesting that all women want small phones; I'm a woman and prefer larger phones (below 6" though). I just found it odd that you don't know "ANYONE" who prefers a smaller phone.

6" is too big for me. My Note 5.7" is slightly too large. I do not mind it but would like it to be just slightly smaller. I would like to see a few mm taken off height and width and make the screen edge to edge to keep the same size screen but reduce size slightly.

For me a phone around the 5" mark is the sweet spot. Anything too much bigger looks and feels wrong. If those rumors are true then I'm moving to something else once it's time to buy a new phone.

Nexus 6 with that specs wont be round 400$ for sure even 500$. That is wishfull thinking. Nexus 5 was bargin, fast perf. etc and 6 wont be with that spirit if they do it like that. It will be just another expensive phone upthere with NOte 4 and ip +. Mabye bit cheaper. Just my opinion.

I would easily move from my nexus 5 to a nexus 6 even if its a inch bigger, bigger screen equals more viewing angle for videos and photos. Plus more likely a better battery.

Videos, photos and battery life are what a tablet is for, imo :)

I've gotten to where I almost never use my Nexus 7 any more... I bought 3 Chromecast for each TV in my house and I just cast video and photo's to the 55 inch or one of my 32 inch LED TV's...... since I looked back at like my last six cell phone bills I average only 60 - 80 minutes of talking per month so unlike when I originally got my HTC EVO 4G what 4 years ago? I am not worried about it being uncomfortable holding up to my head as a phone too much like I use to....

I want the bigger phone so I don't need my tablet... I've carried my Nexus 7 with me and tethered off my phone for the bigger screen... I want to just have the one device with me.... and playing with and knowing people with the Note 3 and the LG G3 they are comfortable to carry around (Except the people who have the Otter Box defender case on their Note 3.. WOW that adds some bulk)

but for the most part it's just personal preference and opinion.... I don't think Google is going to be crying over the sales numbers if it does indeed release as a 5.9 inch device (I got my fingers crossed) I think they will have a planned/expected # of device to sell and they will probably exceed their sales targets at least slightly (I can see them underestimating slightly) That doesn't mean they are estimating to sell 20 million devices... If they made the decision to release just a 5.9 inch device they have a number in mind.... Maybe it's 5 million devices... 2 million.... they are not release this to sell 100 million phones and take over the phablet/mobile phone world... This is a very calculated decision on Google's part....

Most reasonable assumption on google's sales numbers goals. Flat out saying Google could care less about how many phones they sell would be naive. If that was the case, they would sell the lowest spec phone they could get away with. They still have investors the keep happy and don't need a product line to be losing money. They may not be expecting to compete with Apple or Samsung sales but that doesn't mean they aren't going to try.
motorola had already developed Shamu under Google with plans to sell it as the Nexus 6. So the decision the make it a phablet was decided long ago. Phablets are still a niche market so they probably figured it fits better under the Nexus line.

"rumor" has it they will release a 5.2" variant as well. maybe a updated nexus 5?

There's very little substance to the rumor, though, and the only reason people mention it is because they desperately hope it's true.

Maybe I misunderstand your comment.... I didn't in any way shape or form say Google could careless about how many devices they sell.. The Nexus phone line isn't really meant to break sales records or $$$ amount... They've typically sold for at or around cost for the parts to put it together (Which does not even take into consideration the man power and time put into research and development as well) Google also does not advertise and push their Nexus devices anywhere near as much as other MFG's do....

What I was saying is that (as you stated as well) the decision to go to a 5.9 inch phablet device was a decision that was made some time ago... May have been on the drawing board as much as a year or more back as they monitored the "Phablet" market and for the 2014 Nexus they decided now was the time.... I am saying that they have a "GOAL" and a # of units to sell in mind..... Google does not make the bulk of their profits on selling Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 hardware..... If the Nexus 6 is a major MAJOR flop it will have a very minimal affect on their bottom line or investor confidence in the company as a whole....

You are talking about a company with nearly $60 billion in cash on hand..... Who also turned a profit of almost $4 billion in the second quarter of 2014 (Which was up like 16% over the second quarter of 2013) and reported they made $150 million in interest on the the $60 billion in cash on hand... I've posted this before but if they say made 5 million Nexus 6 devices at a cost of $400 per unit (Guessing) that is $2 billion dollars.... Lets say they don't sell a single one and all 5 million end up on the scrap heap and thrown away..... They end up "Only" making a profit of $2 billion for the quarter instead of $4 billion.... and they still have their $60 billion in cash on hand..... They'd have to make that mistake 2, 3 or 4 years in a row to truly affect investor confidence as a whole...

Phablets make up 24% of all Smart phone sales in 2014 so far (I'd guess it will hit 30% by the end of the year with the Note 4, Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 plus on the market)..... hardly a niche market..... a niche market was the 1% it held 3 years ago.. Although as these devices keep getting bigger and bigger the concept of what is a Phablet and what is a regular/normal smart phone may have to be redefined a little....

I was complimenting you on your comment. Too many are flat out stating that Google doesn't care if they sell a bunch of phones. Yeah, I'm sure they would dread selling 10 million phone a week. It's fairly obvious that they have been in the phone and tablet market for other reasons for other then making mounds of cash. A luxury they can afford. It's all about market presence

Having used several phablets before (LG G Pro, Galaxy Note 3 and the Lumia 1520) I think they're amazing devices for consuming media and are a joy to use. HOWEVER I ended up selling my Note 3 because it just wasn't a convenient day to day device to use. Going for runs with it in my pocket was a pain, and it didn't fit well in my shorts at all. It also barely fit in my Jean pockets and I'm 6 foot 1 so it isn't like I wear small clothes.

Interesting maybe but too bad the author has not a clue about Nexus devices. He assumes Google wants to sell alot of them and that is far from even being in the same league as correct. Google could care less how many they sell. The Nexus is not a consumer product it is a tool for professionals that consumers buy as an android toy for the most part.

Totally agree. Hardly any regular buyers are interested in this phone. It is, as you said, a phone that tech-heads buy. The majority of general consumers and even tech fans buy the OEM flagships for the extra bells and whistles they put on them.
