I have been reading on the forum for a few months trying to figure outexactly what i need to do to "customize" my captivate. I would like to be able to remove all of the unnecessary bs apps that came loaded on my phone.I did read a thread on removing bloatware, but the author only selected a few and was just renaming them. I want them gone for good. I would also like to try and load an app called "ems tracker" as i work in fire and ems and think it would be handy. that app is for i phones, so im not sure if it is even possible even if I "root" my phone. I am on the fence as to if I should update from android 2.1 to froyo or one of the others. Which one should I update to if I go this route? I dont want any problems with my phone down the road. I guess the main reason to update it would be a novelty and to walk into my local at&t store and show the saleswoman it "is" available ha ha. When you do update it, are you copying an image of someone elses system and using it as your own or?

Also, I have downloaded kies, but it wont connect to my phone. It just keeps "connecting" but is never connected on the computer. I am also unable to try and download any at&t updates because everytime i try , it says unable to connect to at&t server and closes. whats up with that? I do have pda net installed, could that be part of the problem. Thanks for any input you can send my way

An easy way to root would be with z4root(Google it) and titanium backup for getting rid of the bloat(android market). You can update to Froyo. With titanium backup you can freeze the apps you dont want that way if you ever need to install an update you can easily just unfreeze them. When looking in the market for EMS tracker, the only app that came up was called My Tracker which does have ems on it. You shouldn't have a problem installing it being rooted.
I never used Samsung Kies so not sure what to tell you except check your settings and make sure everything is setup correctly. I do use Pdanet on a MacBook without a problem. Sounds like there's a problem with a setting that's causing the connection problem.

thanks for your reply, would you recommend the cognition v2.3v8 for the froyo update? It seems like this already has the bloatware removed?

I like Cognition, I've been running one of the older versions for a long time, v2.2b8.1 (that version doesn't include voodoo, so I was able to apply the OCLF, which works better with Touchdown than voodoo does).

Check out this post, about backing up your phone before you do anything else:

Find designgears' cognition ROMs over at the XDA forum.

Hope this helps, if so, consider clicking 'thanks' - it makes me smile.

Are your ACR'S still on paper or computer so when you go on a call everything is put into a touch screen and then when you get to the Hospital you plug it into a central hub and it loads all info onto hospital data base for the patient.
Can you do that with ems tracker or is it just a clipboard type of app for storage and then transpose onto a paper ACR or maybe you call them PCR's.

I myself am very close to going to a custom ROM so I can load froyo. I'm getting tired of waiting for Samsung and ATT.

I'm happy with Cognition 2.3b8. However, if you use Bluetooth, there does still seem to be some static issues with Cog. I know DG was actively working on it.

Also, I use the native Mobile AP setting to tether when I need to, and it works like a charm. It's unlocked in cognition

As for the image, you are replacing the ROM build. It is a fresh, individual install.

Issue with the phone seem to be more related to the hardware than anything. honeslty, rooting and loading Cog FIXED a lot of stock issues.

Raven,
Our PCRs are done with software called image trend. Ems tracker is an app you open the moment you are dispatched to a call. There are tabs to press for every event such as dispatched, enroute, arrived on scene....etc. It automatically records the time of each of these events. There are also screens to enter information such as chief complaint, vitals, and your interventions. I have not been able tyo play with it since it is for iphones, but it looks pretty handy. Especially on longer transports. The only drawback i can think of in using an app like this is that there are times we do not want to pull our phone out and use it in some of the environments we are sometimes exposed to ;) Check it out.

Ok I am set on the cognition rom, just wondering should I go with the beta "froyo" version, or stick with the eclair? Anyone know the pros/cons on this? According to the wiki, they appear to have the same features. Any thoughts on this?

Go with FroYo or don't bother. I flashed to 2.3b7 a few weeks ago and it is nice and stable. And fast. :)

One item to note - many custom ROMs include some kind of file system optimization (e.g. Voodoo) pre-installed.

One of the most common reasons for people to have problems down the line is that they forget to disable / turn off the optimization before flashing a different ROM. OCLF can also cause problems if not disabled before flashing another ROM.

That said, the Captivate seems to be very very resilient- everyone that I recall has been able to recover their phone, with a little research and effort.

Hope this helps,

AoN.

Im rooted, now should i use the rom manager from the market, or titanuim backup? arent they both pretty much the same? I have the free version of titanium and it works now, but its telling me to go to "settings" then applications, and tick the "unknown sources" checkbox. My phone doesnt have that checkbox.... I am doing this step by step, root (done), backup, and then install cognition....what method do you prefer for backup?

One more thing... why does titanium want me set to "usb debugging" and im not connected to the cable. whats up with that?
