A few G4 disappointments so far - Camera, performance etc

(I'll message the Mods to find out what happened there.)

Not sure what the problem is, but I see his post as post number 3. If he has a problem with seeing it, he can pm me directly.

I used your Android app to post it so either the app has problems or the posting was held up for some reason but it showed up about 30 mins ago. Like magic.

If you're trying to take photos while walking, you're doing it wrong. No phone camera will do this well.

The issue with the maps is not an LG issue, it's android, and multiple phones have it. It's because of the memory leak on lollipop.

Not true. The gs6 handles this situation quite well

It might have been automatically flagged by system, requiring a moderator to review and approve it. If that was the case then you should have gotten a pm stating as such. After a moderator approves it then the message would show up.

I don't see anything flag worthy. I think it was the app, it needs an overhaul.

I had the S6 for a month, it was for all intents fantastic, however I prefer a larger screen size so returned it and kept the G4

I agree with you on this point + the fact that the gs6 battery life was horrendous. That is the main reason I returned mine.

I also agree with all the points you made in your original post about camera. In fact, I started a thread last week about similar issues.

The reason the camera is a disappointment is not because the camera isn't a good camera capable of taking fantastic photos. It has the hardware to be the best smartphone camera on the market. But LG really screwed up the automatic mode and this is the mode that the camera is used in 95% of the time for most users.

The good news is that the issues are software related. If LG fixes them, the camera could be legendary...

It could have been related to you being a new member. The automated system isn't perfect and we thank you for your input.

Thanks. I deleted the app because it takes forever for what I write to actually post. Plus its in a rudimentary stage. Too bad the G4 has a hard time handling the forum via your full website. Its a toss up between resizing the full site or waiting for the mobile site to finish jumping up and down while it loads a page.

I owned an S6 for a few weeks but found that TW hadnt change enough to be different.. yes it was much slimmer, but it was still too cartoony for my liking, the removal of the battery wasnt too much of an issue for me as im a moderate user, but removing the sdcard then charging £100 difference between the 64 and 128GB versions is not good

The only issue I have with the G4 camera, and its a very small one is a tendency to over-sharpen the subject sometimes, and while it can be fixed in editing, its still needs to be dealt with. The S6 is an awesome camera, but the lack of a shutter speed in pro mode, can remove the ability to add great effects in candid photography, such as water effects and movement.

Both phones are great, but both will have their flaws as their is never a perfect device, ut i guess it just falls to what your needs are and for me, its a bigger screen, a 24bit audio system and full camera..

Point is not to dismiss the camera and the G4, both are fantastic, I just think from a software standpoint a few things could use some help is all.

As for battery I get roughly the same as my S6 though I have to turn everything off on both phones to get good life.

I have location to gps only, no voice recognition for OK Google, location history off, Google now off, circle case off , HD voice off, account sync limited to just the essentials, screen at a max of 50%, all bloat apps disabled, greenify running, gestures turned off.

Its sad lollipop forces this kind of insanity to get decent battery.

In auto mode in perfect conditions you can point and shoot and get an decent to great shot mostly and if you stand very still. However, if you are moving bit like walking and trying to snap a shot forget it, the camera can not keep up, it takes to long to focus and what you will most of the time end up with is a junk blurred photo.

Another area that disappoints me with the camera again point and shoot is the exposure levels, it seems the G4 is trying so hard to keep shots light that it often blows out a great shot and makes it worse due to the fact it is overcompensating when it does not need to.

Now with that being said, I am not saying the camera does not take amazing pictures, which it does, but, as far as point and shoot goes the S6 takes the win easily. Sure it's colors are overly punchy, but as good as this camera is (and it's great), point and shoot is a gamble unless it's in ideal conditions.

I also own both an S6 and a G4 and I know what you mean. The S6 does seem to have a slightly better auto mode. Both cameras are capable of taking amazing photos, but it's harder to take a bad photo on the S6. The S6 is a little more forgiving with motion and is sometimes better at picking exposure or deciding when to use HDR. But the G4 spanks the S6 indoors in low light and the manual controls on the G4 are much more powerful and can be a lot of fun if you're into that.

Well I am in Disney right now so I am using the phone for many tasks, and one area driving me insane is google maps and GPS, for some reason I keep needing to restart the phone since after a few uses of maps it does not start navigation unless I restart the device . Maps shows the route, starts as normal but does not speak or begin turn by turn unless I restart the phone and start again.

Hm. I haven't had that issue. But I will share this... Driving around downtown San Fransisco (big buildings, tough for GPS) with the S6 and G4 in my lap using Google navigation, the S6 occasionally loses GPS lock unless I hold it up by the window. The G4 never loses a lock. The G4 even kept a lock the entire way through a half mile tunnel through a mountain once, where the S6 would drop almost immediately when entering the tunnel.

Another area is the image gallery, this is clearly where I can see a performance hit, the S6 can process an image to display with out letting me see it scaling in real time, what I mean is on the G4 when I look at certain images I get these vertical bands of transparent pixelated white lines scanning over the screen, after a second the image sharpens and looks great, but it bothers me to see this.

This is partly due to the less powerful processor in the G4, yes, but it actually has more to do with software than you might imagine. The S6 has a very well optimized gallery app. Try installing the HTC gallery app I am linking here on your G4 (v9.20.534238 works best). There is one minor bug I experience with it, but I think you'll be impressed with how much faster and more smoothly images load. Gallery 9.20.534238 APK Download - APKMirror

The Piktures app in the Play Store also seems to be fairly well optimized for loading high res images quickly. https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ls?id=com.diune.pictures&hl=en&token=g_dpV_Yf

I also notice certain apps like Tapatalk feel sluggish while scrolling through for categories and posts.

Another poorly coded app. Try this other xda app. It seems like it was taken down in the last couple days oddly enough, maybe because XDA filed a trademark claim, but it runs pretty smooth on the G4 and has material design. Maybe it will be back up soon if you can't see it now. XDA Forums Premium: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...com.xdapaid.CypherStudio&hl=en&token=nLY0k5Sj

FYI. Location to GPS only uses the most battery of the three options.

All opinions and experiences are welcome. But my own experience of the G4 camera is not the same as yours. That's the only feedback I can give. It's certainly the best Android camera I've ever had, and compares favourably to my Lumias 930 and 1020.

I agree. While the Nokia 1020 is the benchmark of phone cameras at this time, it demands a high amount of tweaking and adjustment to get it to really shine and it got to be a pita after a while. The G4 is great out of the box and the auto settings ("point and shoot") far outshines my Nokia.

I'm impressed.

Really, I thought it went gps, wifi and data > wifi and data > gps

In that order for power consumption .

As I understand it, GPS-only forces it to turn on the GPS radio. But "Networks only", aka battery saver, just estimates your location using the cell radio (and the towers it can find), which is already being used. So it's closer to being free, from an extra-power-draw perspective.

Also, you probably already know, but you can set the phone to simply open the camera app when you double-tap Volume Down with the phone off, rather than immediately taking a picture. I don't want it to immediately take one, I want to be able to at least aim the camera properly, and make sure it's focused. With Verizon, this is under Settings, Shortcut key, then un-check "Quick shot".

Also, you can use Key Plus to reconfigure what those shortcuts do. I made Volume Up turn on the flashlight instead.

Hmm interesting, high accuracy would then be medium consumption and WiFi radio being low,or would gps then be the middle since high accuracy seems like it would cost the most since it uses all three

Regarding the camera, it has a HUGE learning curve. I'm not happy with the pictures I took of the moon last night. But it was dark and the moon was the only light. It was foggy and I am still learning the camera.
